Notify new posts doesn´t work

This has been happening for the past couple of months now, where I seem to be automatically logged in or out at random?...
Sometimes during a session when I'm browsing I go to a subject and find I'm no longer logged-in, sometimes when I go to submit a message I have to log-in again? I've been using Mozilla for a long time now but the problems have only come to light the past few months? Any ideas?

It's happening again, random logging in and out
This evening as soon as I open the website I'm logged in already, no problem. check for messages since last visit...lovely! I then do a bit of browsing...no prob's Next I reply to a post...it posts'...and I'm logged out and the post appears as guest So I follow the little angels advice and woof my cookies and evacuate my cache before typing username and password...in I go to the forum only to notice at the top of the page I'm not logged in
This seems to be occurring on an almost daily basis Up until a few months ago LEC worked faultlessly for me (in fact a fine piece of kit indeed ) I'm not aware of changing anything in my set-up to coincide with the downturn in operation, I think I recall problems started about the same time the site had been down for service recently Otherwise could it be a consequence of some Symantec or Windows automatic updates
Any ideas? (besides a stiff Espresso Martini )

I for one haven't touched the site for a while, nor taken it down. So if someone's done something, it's not me . And I cannot go around fixing someone else's problems if I dunno what they've done .

On a more serious note. I've had the same problem is several forums the past few days as well, but it mysteriously sorted itself out, including my own forum elsewhere . Aren't I of much use today

ditto above weird problems over the last month -- and by the number of people accidentally posting as guests I think it is more than coincidence. I was wondering if it was my spyware programs messing with cookies or something, but since it is a common problem I'm thinking it's not an issue on my end . . . ??

To be honest, the recent daylight savings time changes can play havoc with cookies.

It's the cookies that tell the site wether you're logged in or not. Be sure to check the time and date (and year!) on your PC. If you PC's date or time keeps going wrong it could be that the BIOS battery needs changing. Although to be honest most of them do seem to last longer than the PC's themselves.

I have also not changed anything on the site, and cant think of any changes being made to the forum software for several months infact. The only changes recently were in Feb/March time when we were adjusting email settings, which will have no affect whatsoever on logins.

I would be more inclined to point the finger at cookies expiring, incorrect timestamps, or somethign serverside where they have made changes to the configuration of the server the forum is on, so the cookies are actually no longer relevant to the current server. (although the domain name remains constant, the IP address and physical server location of LEC can change within our hosts servers at their will)

Not sure if this helps, but I've noticed a pattern to this "not logged in" phenomenon which I have also experienced over the past month or so:
- when logging onto LEC at work (lunchtime) on a PC I frequently (every couple of days) find I have to log in (ie "log me in on every visit" doesn't work).
- it's been getting worse over the past week or so.
- at home I use a Mac and I have no problems - I'm always recognised when I log on.

This possibly suggests either a "Windows" thing or a server thing (I use Pipex broadband at home and obviously the company server at work).

Any other Mac user care to say if they have also been immune to the "not logged in" problem?

Sorry to burst your bubble of thought there John,

But it's more related to cookies, browser preferences, time zones, operating system/browser updates.

Basically when your cache folder gets full or too large you start getting weird things happening on webpages, and especially with the cookies, the cookies store your recent login information and is how the website can tell if you logged in recently or not. I'm not sure but if you visit the site using www. then visit without using it, the second time wont recognise the cookies of the first.

Try clearing out the cache files, (tick to remove all offline content) as it empties another cache folder too. Make sure the max size it can use is about 80mb which is a sensible limit, some computers have this preset as a percentage of the hard drive space so can be set to silly high.

The only variation you will get when using a mac is that you're using a different web browser, one thats possibly better configured or one that keeps on top of the cache levels and can handle cookies better.
