Running 0.75 Bar on new Peco Big Bore Exhaust .

Postby johnbenk » Sat 25.03.2006, 18:47

Hi All

See thread Peco Big Bore Exhaust.

Have had fiited new Peco Big Bore Exhaust. :-D :-D :-D :-D :D :D :D :D Wow. What a difference an exhaust can make to the overall running of a car. H2 BTK is running on Shell Optimax and has a K&N Filter.

The sound and power is fantastic. Have recorded sound but do not know how to down load short video to web site. Have made a DVD from the passengere seat of the Turbo Boost Gauge the DVD can be played on a computer if you have DVD on your laptop or main computer. I will send the DVD to anyone who wants to SEE and HEAR this exhaust. You can annoy eveyone at work as You "rev up" a LOTUS on your PC.

When you gas the pedal the Lotus spins its wheels in second gear. The BHP is 174 at 6,600 rpm but with K&N made be up to 180BHP.

I am going to get the car on a Dyno just to see the power gains from stock.

JBK.

Ps DO NOT FIT THIS EXHAUST YOUSELF unless you have access to a high lift ramp and a welding torch as you are fitting from the TURBO back and if you break a stud you will have problems. WE had to "Glow" the nuts of the studs with a blow torch so that they would "crack".

Cheers

JBK.

Peco Exhaust

Postby johnbenk » Sat 25.03.2006, 21:43

Hi Paul.

I am friendly with the local Manager of KWICK FIT. I took the exhaust with all the sections and he fitted for me himself.

The hardest part is to remove the Bolts x3 on the turbo downsection.

After 16 years these had seized solid. The only way to get them off
is with a blow torch you get then glowing and take a long extension bar with correct size nut and "crack" the bolt holding the stud. Any other way
and you ARE in trouble AS YOU SNAP THE STUD GOING INTO THE TURBO PART. SO BEFORE YOU START GET THE NUTS OFF THE THREE STUDS FIRST.

If YOU GO TO YOUR LOCAL KWICK FIT ASK FOR THE MANAGER (If he wants he can ring Phil the Manager at Wellington Road Stockport Cheshire of KWICK FIT for the best way to fit the sections togther.Mention Red Elan Sat 25th March at 2pm time taken about I hour including studs.

The exhaust gives a rich deep purr at tickover but when you floor the gas pedal and have a "dump valve" fitted as you change gear you get the "roar" followed by the noise of the dump valve. With the hood down this is truly fantastic :D :D :D :D :D :D :D but at Motorway speeds
with the hood up the sound is not intrusive.

Cheers

I might be wrong on this, but I can't see a downpipe in the picture.

It looks like this system is from the bottom of the pre-cat housing back, not the turbo?

Can you confirm whether this is the case as this would mean this system does not require a stiffy to be fitted?

Thanks

PECO EXHAUST

Postby johnbenk » Sat 25.03.2006, 23:22

Hi

It is fitted from the three studs that come off the down pipe of the Turbo
and passes through without the FLAT BIT of the existing LOTUS Part. It has a flexable section built in (see picture) to compensate for engine movement so it does not need any support at this point. The Old Lotus part joined a section at this point. Peco have been very clever in the way they have routed the exhaust as curve is put before where the old flat part was This means that full bore of the exhaust goes over this section.

They have made the section of the exhaust box as a straight through section so that the gases flow smother out of the tail pipe.

Doesn't appear to replace the pre-cat housing, so still has a 2" restriction in the form of the outlet of the pre-cat housing. Needs a 'funnel' or a stiffy to maximise the potential.

John, are your power figures at the wheels or flywheel?

Hi, I too have just fitted one of these exhausts.

makes a big difference, second gear on boost far more lively.

took me about 2.5 hours to take the old pipe off and replace with the shiney new one. not to bad a job to do, just limited access under the car when its on jacks !

looks good, just want to replce the steel clamps with stainless ones now
