W/gate Solenoid Frequency Valve

Postby Andy C » Sun 11.06.2006, 11:24

Whilst fitting my new Samco's over the w/end, I noticed that the vent spigot on the turbo side of the airbox that attaches to the Wastegate Solenoid Frequency Valve is broken, and therefore the hose is not attached. The other spigot is OK, and the two hoses are cable tied together. At first glance you wouldn't even notice that it is broken .. it could have been like this for ages.

What effect .. if any .. will this have? Is it something I can live with (or have been living with) until I get a new air filter set up fabricated, or do I need to rectify this now?

.. and what the hell does a "W/gate Solenoid Frequency Valve" do anyway :-D

The main issue is that you may have an unfiltered route for air to enter the intake stream. Any hard particles that enter through this could cause wear and damage to the engine and turbo.

The boost contol frequency valve is the device the engine management computer uses to the control the boost. That should still work since only its exit (that vents air exiting the solenoid back into the intake stream) has been affected. Don't close off the end of the pipe or it'll stop working.

If the broken end of the spigot is open then close it up ASAP (and not with anything that might get sucked in), if its been closed off then its not a big deal but you should plumb the pipe back into the intake if possible.

Thanks mate,

I'll patch the broken spigot at the airbox end with some race tape in the short term, and repair the whole thing at a later date.

Good to know its not a critical failure.
