paint repair in bristol area

Postby markiep » Mon 12.06.2006, 11:57

can anyone recomend a good paint shop in the bristol area as i have a patch of blisters on my left front wing that ireally want sorted.the tale of their existence is somewhat sickening.car in my garage.shelves on left side, old can of nitromorse on shelf, nitromorse eats through can gradually runs down shelf bracket to bottom shelf,i think you can see where i'm going with this,i mean you couldn't make it up.the wisdom of leaving a can of paint stripper anywhere near my car is of course debatable but come on what are the chances.Anyway any advice about spraying a small area on an elan or agood paint shop with someone who know their stuff would be much appreciated.

Painting an Elan Wing

Postby johnbenk » Mon 12.06.2006, 16:34

Hi

Depends on "how much" the paint stripper has "eaten" into the Gel coat.

You will need a good body shop guy who is good at "filling in" with plastic filler. My advice would be to find a Classic Car restorer.

Painting is not the problem. Getting the wing to look right from different
angles could prove difficult. It may be possible to do a "fade out" repair.

Have you a photo of the damage??????? You need a product called
a "guide coat" used in the trade this will show any hollows or depressions
caused by the stripper after spraying with primer filler.

Is it at the top of the wing or has it run down all the way?

Had my red elan completely resprayed recently by a small paint shop in Swindon. They did a fantastic job and went to high levels of detail. I would highly recommend them. They specialise in accident damage and the like so doing a smaller area should not be a problem. Not too sure about how accurate they can get on a colour match though. The chief there is very knowledgable about paint technology so might be worth a consult.

Let me know if you want contact details.

Paint matching

Postby johnbenk » Wed 14.06.2006, 19:30

Hi

Paint matching not a problem today. DONT HAVE IT DONE IN WATERBASED PAINT. Go for "clear over base" as it is known in the trade.

Lechler make a good base coat. Try and get a "two pack Lacquer" finish.

A good paint supplier to the trade will supply you with a small half litre of "base coat" ready mixed to match your colour coding.

You need to be in the trade to buy "Two Pack Lacquer " though as it has to be sprayed with an AIR FED MASK.

You can do a fade out repair with base coat but need to clear lacquer the whole wing.

It is the scotching off of the panel that cost the money. You should be looking at about £100 for the wing, but blisters may be more as some filling would be needed.
Labour is the main cost. The paint should only cost you about £10.

I'm working on it Monty. I'm working on it.

Problem is... as soon as I see this bright sunshine and lovely weather... I get in the car and drive it rather than taking pretty pictures.

Tell you what... Once I've washed it at the weekend, I'll take a few snaps of it. I have a few finishing touches to do like wheel centres and a custom designed Lotus Elan logo I've designed for the wheel spokes, but I'll get you some more pics when that phase is complete

The paint and look of the car are dramatically different when it is overcast and when the sun is out. The paint is the lightest red metallic on the market and has a gold fleck in it which glistens in the sunlight. Don't know if I'll be able to do it justice on film but I'll give it a go.
