Popping

On my car (SE with Everest 4.2 and a replacement exhaust – not sure if standard) when im giving the car a good thrashing and then slow down to civislised speeds there is a lot of popping a la TVR coming from the exhaust. Also at lower speeds there is sometimes a waft of fuel after a run. Im guessing this is the unburnt fuel in the exhaust and I don’t mind it so much as it sounds kinda cool but do you guys think I might be overfueling or something ?

The car runs like a dream and has just had a cambelt service at GST so should be in tip top shape.

Just a reassurance would be good that this is normal…or not ??

Jon, this is quite normal, most cars i know of do it. How did you get on with Gerald ?

Mine used to pop even with the standard exhaust on. It happen's a lot more now with a S/S exhaust on. I've spoke to Chris Foulds and he said that it's pretty normal. Holty.

My car was also popping and banging after fitting the Peco exhaust.
I decided to try a lower octane fuel and this has reduced it by quite a lot.
When I mentioned this to Gerald he said the Elan runs better on on a lower octane level. Give it a try, it's also cheaper !!

Quit normal, especially with turbo cars. Ever seen a 911 on the over run, they spit flames out the back. Your correct, unburnt fuel, on a short 911 exhaust you get flames, we dont see our flames

mine pops and bangs with the custom exhaust I have and frightens adults kids and animals .......I love it
on the way back from le mans I flew past some stuff on the motorway...I was then collared by a couple of them as I got back in my car at the services asking me what I done to it and telling me how good it sounded....
