anyone any ideas if this is normal or whats wrong with it if its irrepairable..

This is a normal "feature" of the car. It is a result of the turbo still spinning and producing boost after hard acceleration while the throttle plate is shut. The boost has to go somewhere, so it "stutters" out the turbo/intake producing the sound you hear. See the threads on the BOV as a way to overcome this. It's argued that this modification helps performance slightly and saves wear on the turbo.

Here's a thread with a few further links (the bottom three realting to Bosch valves don't work) if you are interested:

I love your description of the noise. I'll not watch "Silence of the Lambs" in the same way again!

My elan has it all the time.
I like the sound it makes.
Like a dump valve, but not so loud.
Only when i accelerate hard its louder

I hope it was a downshift followed by WOT !!!!!!! If not then you must return to the tunnel and do it right -- louder exhaust than stock helps with the fun too :-D

Lug Maintenance Clinic for an ear waxing Gareth? I'm surprised you've never heard it before - you're obviously a very cautious driver or never take the hood down. Either reason :gray:

Shouldn't that be "Silence of the fans?"

geoff
I only noticed it with the windows down......I cant hear it with the windows up........and yes thats with the hood down.......
only had the windows down to get more wind in the face on the motorway/a roads the 70mph roads anyway!!!!.......up till the 'heat wave' I tend to drive 'spiritedly' with the windows up to cut down on buffeting but with the recent heat the more buffeting the better!!!!

Gareth,

Cornet cochlea damage then?

To be fair, my drive to work is down lanes with high banking so I guess the sound is reflected back. Can't hear bugger all now I've had the Peco fitted, pardon!

Anyway, it's nice weather for having the windows down. Long may it last.
