Dear All:

I guess this is my chance to play Major Frank Burns as far as this category is concerned.

What I would like to do is kick this off with a listing of our favorite tools as in those that make living with an M100 easier. I have received the following admonition from the people in charge:

"As with tools it is perhaps wise that people don't advertise too much what they have or how much it costs or where its kept, as the UK has a very high rate of theft of tools."

So let's keep it safe and generic.

Allow me to kick it off. One tool that has proven invaluable to me in working on older cars is my thread restoration kit. I bought mine at Sears but am pretty sure it is a generic set just re-branded for Sears. Here is the web-site showing the kit http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product. ... 0942275000

The kit does not have all of the metric threads that we encounter on our M100s, but it has most of the more common ones.

I find that I use this kit much more than I ever would have expected. It works better than actual taps and dies because there is less risk of your inadvertently cutting a second set of threads. After cleaning up the threads everything seems to go back together much more smoothly. More importantly, clean, straight threads enable you to get more accurate and reliable torque readings.

They are simple to use. Just put a couple of drops of oil on the threads you are trying to clean up and slowly screw the thread restorer onto the offending bolt or into the offending nut. Sometimes you need to repeat the process a couple of times before everythig is straight and true.

Impact driver - not for the faint hearted but got me out of a few scrapes a few times. First bought on to remove brake drum screw on my Anglia Basically, line up square on screw, hit with a big hammer and the impact driver is driven hard up against the screw and applies a shed load of torque. Standard ½" square drive so useful on nuts too. Must be used with caution if the car is jacked up in any way!

Copper mallet - useful for hitting impact drivers, nuts, bolts etc. without damage.

1/2' drive universal joint - useful for anything in the engine bay as it's so crammed in, particularly good for the thermostat housing - I changed mine without removing anything else!
