Peco S2/Fed cat exhaust development

I've finally managed to find time to get in contact with Dave at Peco.

They are actively persuing the S2/Fed cat option primarily for Ailwyn and Algirdas. Dave has cats on order and hopes to have some feedback in 6-8 weeks. I was hoping we would get an Elisesque solution with a short, replaceable straight section pipe/silencer/cat but this is not possible on the Elan. It is probably going to end up as a length of pipe with some sort of bend so it will probably be more costly/difficult to change.

Dave owns an Elan, so he will do the development on his car and he hopes to perform some comparative dyno runs, so we should also get some information on performance.

As stated elsewhere, this is not going to be a cheap option because of the cost of the cat, however the system will be accurately fabricated and should fit as easily as the S1 version (~15 systems to date), so it will be comparatively hassle free.

For those interested in the US (without an unfeasibly large suitcase and tickets to Stoneleigh ), Peco have already shipped to the States and the cost is ~£60-70.

Thanks for getting information about this. I am interested in the Fed system, and 50-60 pounds for shipping is not unreasonable. It'll be interesting to see what the full-up cost is with the catalyst though.

I'm excited to replace my getting-older-by-the-day system and get a nice shiny system! I've just got my fingers crossed that the whole system is not cost-prohibitive.

Ok, let's start from the proposition that I am a moron. I was poking around under my car the other day and see no reason why a simple two or three bolt flange on either side of the cat with a gasket can't be used to make an Elisesque solution. Bearing in mind that I am a dope when it comes to this stuff, what am I missing?

The problem is that Dave is trying to modifiy the exsiting system, Dave has fitted a 2nd silencer on mine and the problem is there`s a bend in the system near were the cat will fit so it will push the joint near the cross member and isn`t much room for a flange.

Don`t forget this is off the shelf system and jigs have already been made for the exhaust and at the price Dave is selling them he will be strougling to justifiy making new jigs.

Thanks for the information. I must have assumed that the Peco system is an identical copy of the original system and, at least on my car, I assumed there would be space for just such a flange. My bad. I also assumed that slip joints would not be feasible due to the pain in the tail section it would be to disassemble slip joints once they have been on the car for a while (even in stainless steel).

I guess the best thing for me to do at this time is trust Dave and his experts at Peco to work their magic and for me to figure out if I will be able to get the system into the overhead compartment on my flight back from Stoneleigh. Should be interesting. Do you think it will set off the metal detectors?

Thanks Monty. I too had naively thought that a replacement section would be quite easy to produce, but we obviously have to be guided by Dave. He is aware of the requirement to remove the Fed cat for, cough, cough, "track days" so I hope he comes up with a good solution.

I have a simple swap out solution on my custom S2 system. one length of pipe has a cat in it and one doesn't. A simple flange at one end and a sleeved joint at the other that has a standard exhaust clamp around it.

Any news on a Federal system yet? Trying to gauge buying a windshield or an exhaust first (or having the timing belt changed).

I am definitely in for a system ASAP shipped to the US or as a second carry on for Algirdas. I have not found any trustworthy custom shops around to fix my restrictive breathing problems and the price sounds very reasonable. A "track day" swap section would almost be too much too ask for but I am keen on that either at the time of purchase or later mod. The tail looks great, or rather anything would look great compared to what I was gifted with a time of purchase.

I have been a bit lapse in my duties.... had an email from Dave a short while ago.... looks like the Sportcat system might be a pipe dream (pardon the pun):

I'm tempted to go with the Stiffy + SE Peco, then cross the emissions problem when it comes around next year. Worst case scenario is to hang on to the existing exhaust system and have it re-fitted at MOT time, not ideal, but if peco can't supply a sportcat system then this would appear to be the only option.

Since Stevo is stopping the production off the stiffy, i`d just go for the Peco system and leave u`r precat in place.

I don't know if Peco Dave lurks around these boards as much as some of us! If you want me to give Dave a ring on Monday, I'll be happy to do so - I could probably do with getting in touch anyway as I don't know how long he's prepared to keep the "group" purchase offer going.

I don't mind paying and taking delivery of a system now and then getting a credit from Dave when you pay (just before you take it out of the country ). Let me know if I can help.

Thanks for the offer. Would you call him Monday and just remind him that I will probably be able to make it to Stoneleigh and will want a standard non-cat system for the SE. You can remind him that he already has a deposit from me.

The problem with taking early delivery is that there is a limited time in which I can take it out of the country and still get a VAT refund. What I may need to do, and if you are so inclined (remember, "T E Q U I L A"), is pay for it right before Stoneliegh and have him get it and the VAT refund forms to you someway and then I'll pick it up from you over the Stoneleigh weekend.

Then all I will have to do is get a box for the pipes since it appears the silencer will fit in my suitcase.

I could do with seeing Dave again as the backbox isn`t sitting straight and is very close to the bumper if Algirdas pays for the system and it`s ready i could pick it up and bring it to Stoneleigh. But thats only if Dave will sort out my rear silencer

What I was suggesting was that I buy a system, then return it for a refund just before Stoneleigh. You could then buy a system and pay for it and whisk it out of the country before the tax man gets a sniff of it.

Now where that system is and where it goes is open to debate. It could be Monty saves it for me!

I did order a non-cat version (since that's all there is) from Dave. He's been slow to get back, but he said it should ship next week. I'm looking into sport cats to add to it once I get here. Obviously it won't have the professional engineering in choosing the perfect cat, but my exhaust is broken and I desperately need a new one ASAP.

So... if you do call him on Monday, would you tell him that Jeff Greenland with his Federal M100 in Utah is very very excited and anxious to get his.

Wouldn't it be simpler all around, if I just paid for it myself and if either of you were down at his place, pick it up and bring it to me (along with the VAT forms) to Stoneleigh? I think I can buy it as soon as 30 days before my departure from the UK which is tentatively planned for November 15th.

So what are we talking here now? Two bottles of Tequila. You can ask Sy, I only bring the good stuff (i.e. no worm).
