Front Wheel Bearings

Postby TStevens » Fri 04.08.2006, 17:05

My Car just failed an MOT for a wheel bearing! After the guy had told it was an advisory (so im pretty steaming right now).

So... where can I get one from at a reasonable price, and are they easy to do?

Tony, look in Parts Cross Ref, under front wheel bearing & i gave a place thats sells them, because SJ's are on hols. Rear bearings are off an escort but don't know about front.
JPS M100 was built from bare chassis up to create one off M100 in the mould of JPS Team Lotus

In terms of how hard to do:

Not really that hard but requires a couple of specialist tools: Firstly a BIG set of circlip pliers to remove the circlip that retains the bearing in the hub carrier. Secondly a LARGE bearing press to get the old bearing out and the new one in. It will almost certainly disintegrate when you do it, so you then need a lathe or grinder to remove the remains of the old bearing!

Also, the hub nut is really really tight. I bent a wrench trying to get it undone before going down the impact wrench route!

When a bearing breaks up and you end up with the inner race on the hub use a grinder in two places opposite each other to remove, if you end up with the outer race in the hub carrier, run three fillets of weld around the inside the race and let it cool this will shrink the race, remove outer circlip and drift out or use a press, there is a circlip either side of the bearing to aid removal polish all surfaces with emery paper and use copper- slip on re- build
Don't try to defie the law of physics! here endeth the first lesson
