In Harris County, Texas, the DA's office would likely not prosecute you. Their conduct would generally constitute assault with a deadly weapon (car, baseball bat, take your pick) leading up to a voluntary manslaughter charge if there had been a death of some of the people in the convertible. And since you're in the convertible, you've got an objective and subjective fear for your life or serious bodily injury, right? In Texas, the threat of deadly force may be met with deadly force. **poof** Self-defense! Now just imagine what would have happened to that guy and gal if he hadn't been armed?
Funny. Just this past weekend, I had lunch with an old friend of mine. When he was state Senator, he pushed in the concealed handgun licensing law back in the early 90s. Among those forseeing gloom and doom, they kept saying there would be shoot-outs at 4 way stops due to everyone being armed. Well, it's been over 10 years since the law was passed, and my buddy's now the Land Commissioner. And still, no one has been shot at a 4 way stop!
An armed society is a polite society. . .in case anyone ever wondered why the Japanese are so damn polite!

Us Brits are widely regarded as being the politest society of the lot, and we ain't armed.
What's more, much as I love the US, there are more people killed by guns over there each year than die in accidents on our roads.

I'm really glad that the video turned out the way it did, because I was predicting a completely different outcome. In that case it's a blessing that the Beemer driver had defence. But overall, the collateral damage caused by the right to bear arms (or should that be "to arm bears"), is inexcuseable.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

Fortunately here in the US, it is a "to each their own" deal courtesy of our Constitution. IMO though, you can take your pick for situations like this. You can be prepared, or you can be pulverized. I was thrilled to see that this individual was prepared, it kind of shocked me.

Just for fun, I'll throw out some scenarios:

#1 - A man defends his family from intruders armed with knives who have broken into their home in the middle of the night by shooting them and killing them.

#2 - A Guy goes postal at his job for no apparent reason and kills an innocent co-worker.

#3 - A couple gangs of Drugheads shoot each other up.

OK, what do they all have in common? That is right, by the anti-gun crowd; these will all become the same statistic - "Deaths by handguns." Oooh...scary. Some have even included shootings by law-enforcement, etc.

I hate to point out the obvious, but did it ever occur to you that many of the people who ARE shot NEEDED to be shot? That in fact the world is a better place because they were shot and killed?

It is important to realize that when these statistics are given, almost every single time there is no distinction made between accidental, homicide, or self-defense.

IMO, don't leave home without it.

Jack is a lucky guy, Texas is a wonderful state :)

Ah, the vaunted "needed killin' defense!"

For those not familiar, it goes something like this. . .
Judge: Son, why did you kill this guy.
Defendant: Your honor, he needed killin'.
Judge: And why did you think that?
Defendant: He was about to rob the bank.
Judge: Hmm. . .I'll save the jury some time. Dismissed.

Instead of "rob the bank," substitute "about to rape a woman," "was in the progress of smacking someone with a baseball bat," "was about to attack me with a spoon," or any other event that could cause harm to someone.

Most people forget that from the 2nd Amendment, all other liberty rights spring forth. Take away a person's arms, not much they can do to defend themselves against the tyranny of the majority. . .or the government.

God bless Texas! :smt071

Oh hardly! I remember when PM Blair was asked how one would distinguish X from Y regarding terrorism investigations, he responded, "We will use a well known British trait called 'common sense'." Unfortunately, we (in the US) have become so damn apologetic of our wealth and power that we've lost sense of common sense. I read in the NYT recently: Oakland Fights Crime With Talk. The story gets better, "The authorities in Oakland, Calif., have decided to call in the bad guys and tell them to knock it off. Or else." And what effort by law enforcement can go without some absurdity by the ACLU. An ACLU lawyer suggested that bringing the criminals into court to give them a stern talking-to might violate the criminals' civil rights. In face of such absurdities, thank you, I'll stay armed.
I remember my law professor asking an English judge friend of hers. "What happens if Parliament passes an absurd law that all blue-eyed babies must be killed?" "We would carefully discover that no child is in fact blue-eyed." Guns work in the American diaspora, but the British choose a different path. It works for them.

For all you budding pilots out there.....

Postby jimp357 » Tue 19.09.2006, 10:34

Hmmmm Calico. Nearly bought one once......

The UK doesn't have a gun policy. It went in the "Ban it" culture. Strange how, now that they're banned, more people have been killed with them than when they wern't. Funny how banning handguns stopped all the illegal ones?

........enough, I'm off the soap box.

and now for something completely different.

Opps. Needed a longer runway

What in the world?!? I imagine Doug will enjoy that one....

Short of an emergency that was just nuts! I was waiting for a turbine to shatter & create a nice fireball (not being a pilot I have no idea if that WOULD happen - it just seemed a logical result).

I can't believe how long it took them to get the boats away either.

One suicidal bunch.

Yes, enjoyable.

Notice the tail number "OY-JET"

this is not a US registered plane (got to look up the OY to learn the country of origin.) [edit: looks like "OY" may be Danish]

i guess if the plane is a loss, if you have the balls you try to taxi it out of the shallow water -- brilliant. Yes, had the water level gone up it would have shattered the engines . . . clearly a competant pilot
