Fuel Cap Area Filling with Water

Postby DaKa » Fri 15.09.2006, 08:56

I always have to sponge out water from the fuel filler cap area as it is not draining way.
Obviously the drain hole is blocked somewhere.
I can't see where it goes to, but presume it runs out somewhere underneath the car?
I was going to get a length of wire and try and push it through the drain hole to clear the block- Is this a good idea?
I'm worried that if I puncture the hose then the water will simply empty in to the panel, car or boot.
Anyone else had/solved this problem?

DaKa,

Best not to use wire for the reasons you state. There's a right angle bend a few inches along the drain tube.

This has been covered on the forum (try the search facility). Some people use nylon strimmer line, some compressed air, and in bad cases some people have had to take the interior trim off to get at the drain tube.

If you have a look under the car you will see the tube coming out between the petrol tank and the sill.

In the past i've used a piece of aircraft locking wire... it worked a treat..

It also doubles up for the paper clip test... :D

The drain comes out next to fuel tank, After a quick clance under the car; you can see it sticking down by about an inch or so..

Daka, like John says, there is a 90 degree bend a couple of inches down the tube, & thats normally where it blocks. I actually took my interior trim off & disconnected the pipe, wherupon its easy to clean out, but would try blowing it out with compressed air first !
