2nd & 4th not engaging...

Postby Brasco » Mon 30.10.2006, 14:36

I'm having problems with my crossgate cable, the abutment bracket gave on my way home from work last week, leaving me to struggle back in 3rd. We've knocked up a replacement bracket and the cable is now being held in place, but I'm still having difficulty selecting 2nd and 4th. the adjustment lock on the cable is locked ok, the cable can't be stretched as it would affect the other side of the shift (1,3&5) so I'm completely stumped. Anyone got any ideas? :?

Try to "center" the gear selector by unlocking both cable ends at the transmission, having someone hold the selector in the car at a center point, then locking both ends again. It may be the crossgate cable is adjusted such that it can't move fully to engage.

The other option would be to check the ends (locks and cables) at the gear selector end. It requires a bit more time/work to get to, but isn't very difficult.

Good luck.
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

what's actually happened to the cable is that the section after the twistlock has broke and is allowing the cable to give too much when I'm changing to the down gears. We've welded a metal splint to the bracket and clamped the cable housing to this as a short-term fix. looks like it's going to have to be a new/ modded cable tho. :(
