I may be being very ignorant here, but I am just about to fit a dump valve. I noticed everyone connects the vacuum tube to the pipe that goes to the boost guage....but that's way over to the opposite side of the engine to the valve.....can the pipe that runs from the manifold on the right hand side at the rear not be used? or is this a no no.

excuse my real ignorance but what does a dump valve actually do apart from i assume dump air and make a noise? Does it assist performance?

Well...Hm the Jury is probably still out on this one....erm...it makes a good (or horrible depending on opinion) noise..i'ts fun and customises...looks nice.
Some say that it effectively attempts to stop the turbo from slowing or even stopping when it has to pump against a closed throttle valve occuring when gears are being changed. It means that when you change up through the gears there is less turbo lag since when you put your foot down after changing up a gear the turbo is still spinning and takes less time to get the boost pressure up.
But truth be known most people say it makes no difference. But I bought mine from ebay for £15 brand new from Hong Kong...so it must be good quality! so I could not resist fitting it!...we will see if it makes any difference tomorrow.
They are fitted to many cars as standard.....If you ever watched the top gear episode when Clarkson tested the Noble M12 some time back..he described it as sounding like Darthvader!

In fact it is probably about as Effective as your K&N air filter is...but it feels good!
