Stainless, big-bore exhaust

|don't know whether my previous question/problem has or will be posted on the forum. I was asking about big-bore exhaust sytems, where to get same, how much to pay and what to do about the over-boost problems that can occur after fitting.

I have since been told that big-bore systems make SE Turbos run like s**t and all that is needed is a Sports system which has a much less restrictive silencer. This, apparently, allows much better breathing and so 'job done'!

Does anyone out there have any experience/comments?

Not sure why anybody would tell you that an SE would run badly with a big bore exhaust as my and I believe the general view around here is that going from the stock 2" exhaust to a 2.25" or a 2.5" is of significant immediate benefit in terms of performance gains and also an essential pre-requisite if you want to get the maximum benefit from other performance enhancers such as one of ESM's chips or even the 'old fashioned' manual boost control. Just going to a sports exhaust still leaves you with a 2"restriction for the majority of the system. If you enable the engine to boost more you have to give the gasses a means of escape, ie match the increased input by increasing the available output. Boost creep is a possibility with a bigger exhaust and yes it's a pain if you hit the fuel cut off because of this. The solution however is straightforward, for the majority of people the increased fuel cut off level in an ESM chip means that when it is combined with a big exhaust fuel cut off is unlikely (I have no problem with that combination). A guaranteed solution is to port the wastegate to ensure it can flow enough exhaust bypassing the turbo. As far as availability of large diameter exhausts for an SE go you would be hard pressed to find a more cost effective option than the PECO system described at length elsewhere on the forum.

Thanks for advice. Have spoken to PECO already but they sold out prior to end of November price increase! Have to wait for new run.

dont know where you are in the country......but I had one custom made with straight though silencer in 2.25" stainless for £275 in macclesfield cheshire...it was pre peco but there have been a couple of other who've had it done at the same place...its all they do.....design exhaust systems for race cars......
theyve got rid of the squish and it doesnt over boost....
dont know how or why but the sound is a dream.....
I even got accosted at several service stations in the uk and france on the way to LM asking what it was abd where I got it coz it makes a really sweet sound when you stick your foot down

Had my PECO fitted today, very nice sound not too loud (was a concern didnt want to sound like a chav), and no sign of overboost so far although havent had much of a chance to give it a full test yet just drove straight back home (via a few twisty roads!! ).

I had a custon 2.25" job fitted in Essex, the car immediately improved significantly in power and sound, unfortuantely not driven it much since =(
