I found most of the manuals on the file sharing networks, not just for the Elan either, pick a car and there's usually something available.

Don't suppose you found a parts list for an Elan + 2? LOL

Due to infringement concerns, I have removed the manual links from my site that were acquired elsewhere. I made them available on my site so that I could access them anywhere. I really have a hard time reading through the copyright watermark but completely understand the reasoning. I have no wish to step on the toes that have made ownership of my Elan so much easier by the efforts of supporting this website.

I, too, find it hard (sometimes impossible) to read through the copyright protection script. Although, I'd be the first to say how grateful I am for having them at all. But, here's a possible suggestion.

Once you've reached fanatic status, taking 200 posts, you could get access to unaltered copies. The thinking being that you'd have to spend a lot of quality time here on LEC to post that much. In doing so, you'd become known to other LEC members, likely demonstrate that you actually own an Elan and are intent on becoming a good community member.

Afterall, if someone really wanted to take the copies available here and strip the print in Adobe Acrobat they could do so easily with a little investment in time. Given the price they sell for on eBay they'd have to sell a lot of copies to make upo for that investment. And we all know no one here, the majority of Elan owners worldwide, aren't going to buy them.

Just a thought.............

I'm becoming increasingly blasé about this. You just might find me uploading untouched copies to the manuals area over the Festive Season. Just depends how thoroughly bored I get..

I am scratching my head about this really, if the objective is to prevent people selling them on ebay then the easiest and most effective method is to make them freely available.

My only question would be under what authority and/or conditions does LEC host them? Are we, by continuing to host them (even with copyright notice), opening up the site and admins to nasty letters from Lotus' lawyers?

If arses are covered then my vote would be to continue hosting and allow unrestricted downloads to anyone that wants them.

But the second part of my post asked if we are doing the very same, we just have a selective process about it?

You have no right to copy 'copy righted' material, there is no 'backup clause' for artistic or literary material, you are breaking the law make no mistake.
The 'back up clause' applies to electronic computer software, not even cd's dvd's etc.. You have broken copy right law by scanning the image into your machine in the first place.
Distributing it or 'sharing' it is just as illigal, the reason people are not prossecuted is because a loss of earnings claim is hard to be established when the originals are not for sale. This is also why I am comfortable doing it, you will not catch me making copies of my music or films for other people.

You may own the manuals but you don't own the writing, music, images etc. that is what 'copy right' is all about - you do not have the right to copy it.

The whole: it's a backup there for it's legal, is wrong.

I'm not a lawyer but I thought most copyright laws were concerned with the profit or gain one might acrue from distribution. Even though it says "don't distribute dummy" in most of the terms regardless..........

Not that this makes it ok to distribute. Be hard to prove damages from distribution though. Especially if we end up buying parts from Lotus or Lotus distributors because of it

Wouldn't passing them along at all, even with the COPYRIGHT label enblazoned across the front of each page, be "illegal"???? :smilie behind bars icon:
