I'm afraid that the USB development is loking a bit monochrome at the minute Brian - any colour you want as long as it's black. If the worst comes to the worst, I could always get some subtle detailing done by JB. :wink:

Forgive me if this has already been covered...would it be possible to go from ALDL to a USB female panel mount that would be permanently fitted in the dash?

Update on the USB development:

At the moment, I am going down the route of a USB cable that ESM turned up; it is about 2 m / 6 feet long and includes the decoding device within the plug moulding which saves me having to solder a 32 pin device with a 30 thou pin spacing. :shock:

I'm currently looking to mount the ALDL interface circuit in a box about 45×30×20 mm / 1¾×1¼×¾ inches or even 40×28×18 mm / 1½×1×½ inches. I will probably mount the box on the back of the glovebox and leave the cable inside the glovebox ready for use.

I have got the optically isolated circuit working but I need to optimise it to ensure it works at all temperatures. The isolator means that there will be no direct electrical connection between the laptop and the car - any noise spikes generated by the car's electrical system should not make it to the laptop. I should point out that although this is possible, it is very unlikely and I wouldn't have used the serial interfaces or released them if I thought the risks were at all significant.

The USB side of the interface gets power from the pc and the ALDL side draws current only when the pc is connected or the ignition is on. It should be possible to leave it permanently plumbed in without adding extra load on the car's battery.

The female USB connection would have been a possibility if I had persisted with building the USB interface myself, but the prototype build was extremely hairy and time consuming. I will look into the bulkhead connector again to see if a permanent socket could be provided.

At the moment it looks like the price will be about 30GBP / 60USD.

Brian,

Looks like the pictures you've posted are expecting a USB peripheral to be connected to a PC.

The ALDL interfaces of old have required the other USB connector to be attached (i.e. the "slave" side). As both (iirc) are female, the way to distinguish on a usb connector is one end (slave, printer, etc) is square-ish, while the other is flat-ish.

Geoff's interface (that he was waving around in the BOLLECKs meeting) results in the flat connector which plugs directly into the USB port on your PC/laptop, I think you might have difficulty (even if there isn't a x-over in the cable) of finding a flat-USB to flat-USB cable.
