Paul Matty exhausts

Hi All,<br><br>My exhaust is now in two incompatible parts so I need a new one.<br><br>Rang PM, and a parts chappy said they did fit only.  Which will not work as my car is in sussex, they are near Birmingham, and my exhaust is very loud!<br><br>Their objection seems to be that it is very difficult if fit and requires custom work (with hear apparently).<br><br>Has anyone had or fitted one of these themselves, ie not using PM fitting service.<br><br>I need to get my car fixed.<br><br>Thanks

PM will supply the Double S system (or parts thereof).

US based Dave?<br><br>My Mechanic and Roy from PM are hopefully having a chat now.  My mechanic seems not too keen to fitt it due to the "Custom" nature and the possible need to heat it to bend it into shape

I fitted the SJ sports exhaust system myself. It was a real pain but only because I am not a mechanic. If you can't persuade PM to sell one, SJ certainly will.<br><br>Good luck.

Yep that's me <br>There is lots written on this forum about the sports exhaust from PM - a search should find most stuff.<br>PM will sell you "supply only" but only if you promise not to call every 1/2 hour to complain They resist for a reason!<br>The following is a summary of my experiance - it is posted somewhere else on this forum but I can't find it. Sorry to repeat it as it caused some adverse reaction the last time - items 7 & 8 that is ;D<br><br>"Recently I got the chance of a Paul Matty "Sports" Exhaust system "on the cheap", well what would you do? <br>PM were VERY reluctant to sell this "supply only". They stressed it is a sod to fit and boy are they right! Without a lift you will curse! They also suggested further engine mods would be neccesary to prevent boost creep. <br>Some points to note: <br>1. It is not 2 1/2". The centre and muffler tubes are 2 1/4" (57mm) with the "front" having a prominant squished section which is really far to long IMHO (It is not really a front, this is not supplied. It is the Squished pipe aft of the spherical joint) <br>2. The spherical joint flange is too small. It does not fit the seal very well which in turn is 0.5mm too small for the stock front. <br>3. The spherical joint flange is at the wrong angle to mate with the stock front. Difficult to get a good seal. <br>4. The centre comes very close to the front chassis hanger bar, actually mine touched. <br>5. The Muffler does not sit in line with the car, this results in the tail pipe being angled out, very boy racer-ish! You will wonder what they were thinking of. It would have been so easy to get this right. <br>6. The muffler hangers did not come even close to the correct positions. The rear on mine needed re-bending 1/2" and I had to source some revised rubbers to get the tail pipe to sit centrally in the bumper (fender?) <br>7. It is LOUD! I am getting too old for this loud, especially as I thought the stock (OES muffler) sound quality was good. Sound quality is actually very good, just too loud for my taste. <br>8. The car does seem to fly now. Maybe it is the noise making it sound fast. Doubt if it is giving as much as 40 BHP as some claim tho', especially when you see the squished front.<br><br>These comments apply to my system. Obviously manufacuring tolerances mean I may have got hold of a particullarly bad example. Also the above is in no way negative towards PM, they are a great bunch of guys. As I said they were not happy supplying this system and it is everything they described (apart from 2 1/2" that is). Sy<br>It seems strange we both have systems that were b1tches to fit :-/<br>Can't believe they can make them such a bad fit - it must be fairly easy to make a simple fitting jig from an OE system.<br>I guess PM are sick of fending off irate customers hence their reluctance to sell "supply only".<br>As Rod says elsewhere, noise is subjective. Lots seem to love it <br>I can only suggest that anyone tries to hear before they buy if possible.<br>BTW does this explain your 205bhp? Rod also shows 40bhp gain but I'm not sure if this is combined with 14.5psi

It's certainly a large contributory factor.<br>I'll revert to my standard signature block at the w/e and you can see the list of other mods.

I know that milltek are good but has anyone had experience of powerflow exhausts - they seem to "specialise" in making exhausts to your needs....

Everyone's mileage will vary of course - but *I* did get +40bhp. At the top end of the rev range - feck all extra below 4500rpm - hence the mods that followed...<br>

Found this thread as the very last one in the section, so now it's revived.
Talking to PM this very morning and he let slip that he's having a new exhaust built. His main concerns were the laborious nature of the fitment.
I gave him the lowdown on owners'/viewers' feedback in that 'generally' people liked the tone and sound of the exhaust and those lovely overrun pops that you can get, but that the main dislike was the fact that it looks like an aftermarket part because of the angle at which it protrudes, at the rear.
He had not had this said to him before and I took him to see mine and another customer's Elan which had the South West exhaust fitted.
He promised to address the problem in this new build.

did u tell him to do away with the squish too otherwise it`s cheaper to have a custom exhaust done
