Lotus Elan Central

Hi Guys,

I've finally found my Elan.

Been looking around, on and off for a few years, but other Elises seem to always have stopped me from scratching the Elan itch. I've still got my 340R, but some time next month I should be picking up a one-owner, low mileage S2.

Can't wait, as it'll mean that I've got a Lotus I can use whatever the weather, and use for weekends away and the like, while still having the 340R for B-road fun when the Scottish weather is kind.

Looking forward to meeting like minded individuals at future events.

There is nothing on God's Earth to compare with a 340R. It's hot, it's noisy, it's sweaty, it's raw, and it makes anyone a driving god. :twisted:

In all honesty, there are times when it's not necessary to drive like you hair is on fire, and for that reason (as well as the practicality) we've gone for the Elan. I guess it's not too often the M100 is referred to as the sensible car.

You seem to have a good group here, I hope it's not too long before I'm able to contributre something sensible. In the meantime, I'll try to remember to use the 'search' function before asking the dumb newbie questions.

Welcome Derek and good luck with the purchase. Your first search should be "S2 database" which will lead you here. :wink:

We haven't got 22 listed so Gary will be a happy man if you can provide some information.

your above posting is true ,you can use it whatever the weather but it may well leak .. hopeully not to much !! and usually on the passangers knee anyway..

Mine leaks on drivers knee...

I find my Elan very comfortable on a longer drive. I have heard that the Elise is the opposite.
The Elan is also not a pain to get in & out of.
Still a load of fun to drive though. :smt023

I've driven mine to Aberdeen from Durham and back twice now.

Also drove it back from Edinburgh when I bought it.

It was great every time.

This will be our 5th Lotus, and I'm sure we've got ourselves a dry one which is great, and only 1 owner with 21,000 miles, a full Lotus history, in pacific blue with a blue hood.

The thing with the 340R is that when you go somewhere, you've got to come back (IYSWIM!). The Elan gives us a Lotus we can use for weekends away etc.

Looking forward to getting as involved with the Scottish Elan community as we are with the Elise crowd.

My only complaint is that when I have to drive on the highway, after about 45 minutes at a constant speed, I'm looking for somewhere I can stop to get my right leg amputated! I may commit a mortal sin and install a cruise control!

I'm not collecting the car for a couple of weeks, so no pics for a while I'm afraid.

However, if you go and have a look at your car, and imagine it as an S2, with the 16 inch wheels, a blue hood and dark leather, then you'll not be too far away. :-D

Finaly collected the Elan yeaterday and I'm pleased with it - it certainly drives and rides better than any 13 year old car deserves to.

Fixed the pax mirror, where the glass was flapping a little in the housing, and put some dry slide in the locks to free them up a little.

All that seems to be outstanding is to get to work on fitting a switched live to the radio. :evil:

Spent most of the day in the 340R though - taking advantage of the winter sunshine :twisted:

The light was against us as we took the pics, though, so they don't reflect how tidy the car is :roll:

There may be more room to move your accelerator leg around in a RHD car. I'm assuming the pedals still go clutch on the left, gas on the right. In the LHD car, there is absolutely zero room to move the right leg because there's no space between the gas and the center console. it makes for major discomfort when driving at constant throttle for any length of time.

Looks tidy from those pics. I see what you mean about the light though; it looks a lot greyer than I expect it really is. Discounting fade, there are actually 2 shades of Pacific Blue, neither of which look as grey as that

I can attest to the lack of room. I had to buy new, narrower shoes so I could work the accelerator without hanging up on the brake!

I took the Oem pads off of the pedals and put non-slip tape on them. That almost cured the problem of my foot catching on the brake pedal, but it doesn't do squat for the cramping in the leg after 30 minutes at constant speed.
