My glovebox lock barrel has fallen out in the locked position (saw the other post too late, doh!). Has anyone else had experience of replacing it? I could really do with an in depth procedure (with pictures if poss) as I am nervous about taking a hacksaw to something I can't see or visualize. Also, am I correct in assuming that SJS supply (A082U7985F) a new catch, not the lock? Any help greatly appreciated.

My parts manual has been borrowed and is out of my hands at the moment- but IIRC, you are correct that SJS supplies a non-locking latch (the plastic bit, but solid w/o a lock in the center) as the locks are quite prone to sticking in the locked position... My Elan came w/o a glovebox lock, I got lucky in finding a used replacement with an original lock (at least until it breaks or I replace it with a more reliable version).
Not sure how to fix the lock itself. Sorry!

Thanks for the reply Matt. I have now fitted a non-locking replacement. No hacksaw used, just removed the already loose barrel, tugged on the catch, it detached easily, then the glovebox opened

Nice!
I'll keep that in mind when mine goes
Glad that you are set with the new latch. If you really want a locking mechanism for your glove box, and still have the old barrel, you might have some luck taking it to a locksmith and getting a new lock fitted. IIRC, Darren had some success with that a while back? Something I have been meaning to look into myself.

I would prefer a locking glovebox but I am now a bit wary of the latch mechanism (which I have still got). I think the old catch pivot pin was previously broken and bodged into position. I will keep all the bits and take your advice when I have summoned up the courage to look at it again. Thanks again.

Did you ever summon up the courage?
Guess what I'm playing with at the moment!

Hi Geoff,
Decided it wasn't worth the hassle and worry of it going again so fitted none locking one....might investigate if anyone on here has come up with a better barrel design someday
Hope you get it sorted, would be interested in how you get on...
Busy with new brake lines all round and just finished adjusting shut lines on light pods...what a fiddle and faff
Did you get anywhere with the USB converter?

Glad to see you're paying attention!
There's a collation of glovebox links and more on the
glovebox lock dissection as well.
