just noticed the post about "should you declare your chip or not".my dads an insurance assessor(owns his own company infact) and when asked to inspect a car hes not that familar with i.e rare or old sports cars etc he use forums like this one to ascertain current values, any known faults e.g rusty wishbones  that would not be the result of a bump or crash.the first thing he'd notice when he checked out this website would be all the mods u list and talk about.some assessors may be diddys but his lot aint.i suppose the mere fact im looking at getting an elan he'll know even more about them now and if he ever comes across one he'll know exactly what to look for.being his own company he'll cover his back by making sure his report is 100% accurate.he's often asked to go to court when theres a dispute wether it be a car he's seen originally or not.he's also asked to do scene of an accident reports to establish speed of impacts, reasons for crashes etc.this was a pisser when i was growing up i could never lie to him about how i'd crashed ,he always worked it or knew the damage was'nt consisent with my version of events.i'd declare any mods for sure, insurance companies are about making money and only paying out when there sure everything adds up 100%.by the way he covers the WHOLE of scotland for a lot of insurance companies.

none taken mate as he doesnt sell insurance,he inspects the cars for the insurance companies when you 've made a claim.most of the big insurance companies contract out the inspection of damaged cars, vans, bikes even caravans and tractors.so he'll go to the garage or your house and examine your car ascertain if your version of how the crash happened by comparing the damage of your car to your story.he can tell how you hit something, how fast what angle by looking at the damage.people often try to pass off damage from other accidents as having happened at the one he's investigating.the insurance company will then authorise repairs only for whats in his report.thats why he'll be spot on incase you want to dispute it with the company or in the courts.so if someone crashed there elan in scotland and he was asked to look at it he'd find this site a great source of info and also be asking to see/have tested your ecu to find out how fast you really were going at the time of the crash or to see if it was chipped, maybe your car would even be on this site listing all ur mods.so if you've not declared your chip/bbr conversion your sports exhaust and he finds evidence of it the insurance company may not want to pay out.always declare,if the assessor does his job right he may notice things you not expect him too.my dads been doing this for 30 years not much gets past him i should know!

When i had my crash, i don`t even think the clove box was even opened, never mind them even knowing what and ECU looks like. I would say 99% don`t even get there hands dirty. I would like to know how u`r dad would even know if it had been chipped  :-/. There`s people out there with BBR kits and chipped and don`t even realise it  :o<br>For u`r dad to make an accurate account of what happen in an accident he would have to be at the scene. I never even got a producer of the police, all they was interested in was clearing the scene to get the traffic moving again.<br>But i will agree that u do have to be careful of what u put down in u`r signature ;D

No matter what you do, insurance is a con.  Like fruit machines, you'll pay them far more than they'll ever pay you.<br><br> [smiley=soapbox2.gif]<br><br>My little brother is into "modding".  He declared every single thing he'd done to the car.  Engine, suspension, bodywork, wheels, everything.  Someone else caused an accident that wrote his car off.  The "assessor" (and I use the term lightly) came out, looked, spend 10 mins with the car.  He checked f**k all, except that the car had indeed been in an accident.<br><br>End result - they paid out for the bog standard car based on age.  He'd been paying £1300/year premiums, been totally honest in declaring the thousands spent and they (assessor included) shafted him.   [smiley=moon.gif]<br><br>My experience so far (and I seen this happen more than once) is that they (the isurance industry as a whole) are only interested in what's in it for them( Of course, you all say, I know, but its all the patronising crap on helping people that gets me).  None of them give a toss about the people they represent.<br><br> [smiley=banghead.gif]<br><br>Am I a might annoyed with the insurance [s]con[/s] industry....you bet.  [smiley=yes.gif]<br><br>Ahmen, here endeth todays sermon.......... :-X

I'm really glad that you came out OK   :D. exceptions to everything, as they say.<br><br>I know there are good aspects, and its nice to hear from someone where the system worked.<br><br>I helped build his car, and the blood, sweat & tears that went into it.  At least when it was written off we thought he'd get some of it back.  Didn't expect all, but alot more than he got.  Mind you, tought the little sod a lesson.  He hasn't modded the replacement.<br><br>The police wern't even interested in sorting the culprit out.<br><br>It just really pi55es me off when you try and do the right thing and get stuffed in return.....

an insurance assessor should do more than just check your cars been in an accident,he has to agrree with what the garage have estimated or disagree, maybe because its my dads company he makes sure he gets it right cause if he caused an insurance company to pay out money when they should nt have or agree repairs that could have been done cheaper he'd lose his contract.maybe i sound as if im on my high horse,i'm not.<br>agreed some assessors are diddys, just as some police, doctors, joiners etc are diddys.monty what my dad is asked to do is revist a scene of an accident look at the persons account of what happened, take into account the damage to both cars the surrounding area and from just the impact damage you can tell who hit who  from what angle and how fast each car was going, and just as the police do ascertain whos telling the truth, not for convicting someone of an offence in court but for the insurance company so they can claim the money back from the other party involved i.e pass the bill on to the other company.<br>an mgf ![smiley=censored.gif]<br>monty all im saying is anybody who logs on to this site reads about all the mods in ur list reads about stevos smokey and the bandit high speed jinks  [smiley=wink_2.gif].this forum easily accessible to anyone including insurance companies.my point was my dad if he was asked to look at elan would use the internet as a source of information,as this site would come top of any google search no doubt, and from this site he'd see theres chipping going on,and his report would list ur mods which the insurance company would check against your policy.max powering ur car does not add any extra value to it [smiley=headscratch.gif] except if you want to sell it to a fellow max powerer.thats just the way it works.there in it for the money and you cant drive without them.<br>my house has just went on the market so as soon as it sells i'll be looking for an elan mods or no mods!

Get an agreed valuation and then they have to pay what's agreed.

unless the null and void your claim, see game ons comments in "mods.what do they cost to insure?"<br>apparently his policy was null and void because of a dump valve he hadnt declared,so sometimes assessors spot these things after all [smiley=wink_2.gif]<br>did you declare/notify or enquire about insuring your hardtop? how much extra did they charge?

i totally agree, insurance companies are only there to make money and they do that by taking our money and then trying to pay out as little as possible.there total cnuts!<br>i dont have an elan yet,(but soon very soon) so this was one of the few threads i thought that i could actually contribute to!<br>no offence has been taken at all,one thing i've noticed about this forum is that it's all in good fun even the slagging![smiley=wink_2.gif]<br>
