Setting up Elanscan on Windows Vista

Postby jon3929 » Fri 05.09.2008, 21:59

Hi,
Whilst Ive seen a few threads regarding Vista, none seem to answer the issue i have.
I had Elanscan set up on my old desk top PC running XP, but have just got a laptop with Vista, and I cant get the drivers set up. There appear to be a couple of differences which I cannot figure out.

1. When plugging in Elanscan it does not appear on the device driver as a comms port, but "other" device
2. When trying to update the driver to Elanscan, vista appears not to let you select a file, but only to search a folder
3. Without a driver I obviously cant configure it to a comms port....
3. Is the FTDI driver i used on XP the right one for Vista?

Whilst Im clearly no IT wizard, im not that IT illiterate!!! or at least i thought not....
Hope someone can help!
cheers, Jon.

Jon,

No experience of Vista at all, but FTDI claim them to be compiant. Check out their drivers page.

jon,
Sympathies.

I bought a new laptop PC with compulsory Vista at the beginning of the year. I've not managed to get Geoff's USB interface to work with it. I'm using my old laptop with serial version interface for Elanscan.

I don't like Vista. It thinks it's in charge of the computer. I'm having trouble telling it that actually I'm the person who paid all the cash and therefore I'm the person in charge of it.

If you find a solution, do tell....

Have you tried the executable setup file here?

I haven't got Vista (avoiding it like the plaque in fact) but it might be worth a try.

Well I have done it......

As suspected it was a process issue rather than an incompatibility or something more serious.

I used the same VCP drivers as for XP and the file that ultimately enabled the device was called "ftdibus". Before starting I unzipped all the files onto my desktop asI had no success in getting Vista to searh folders, the files needed to be fully exposed and I just used my desktop for ease.

Here's how i think I did it:

1. When the elanscan interface is first plugged it, it appears as "elanscan interface" but as an "other device" not a port .
2. Right clicking and selecting the driver tab reveals it has no drivers allocated.
3. Following the process to assign a driver, select the manual method under "browse my computer"
4. Then select "let me pick from a list" option
5. Then select the "have disk option"
6. Then select the browse for file option.
7. At this point it is looking for a *.inf file which is not correct
8. Delete the file extension
9. Then select Desktop and it automatically selected the driver file "ftdibus"
10. Select ok and it says the driver has been successfully configured.

HOWEVER - it hasn't.

11. When looking again at the device in the device manager, it now shows Elanscan as a COM PORT, but also showing a yellow exclamation mark indicating a fault, and without a com port number.
12. Repeat exactly, the process from 2-10 above and reassign the driver for a second time.
13. Again it will say the driver has been successfully configured.
14. Checking in the device manager, it now shows the device as a COM PORT and mine defaulted to "COM PORT 13".

I then could set the latency timer to 1 (because it now recognised the device as a comms port), and then set Elanscan to communicate through port 13.

Lo and behold it communicated perfectly and works a treat.

Its nice to actually be able to put up something useful rather than just ask questions. Hope this is useful to others.....

cheers, Jon.

Jon,
Well done. :smt038
How on earth did you work that one out?

I'll try it on my laptop when I can get it back from the kids.

I knew there was a reason I kept my ancient Toshiba running Windows2000 for ElanScan. :)
Great work, Jon. Well done!

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my Vista equipped laptop to work with elanscan.

Is there a specific 'ftdibus' driver to use? I've downloaded a generic one but it still doesn't work.

Any help greatly appreciated.

hi steve
i had mine running last year on vista, then the laptop died and bought a new one with windows 7, both loaded the same
i'm useless on computers, so this is not that technical,
i just downloaded the drivers on elan scan page ,
then all i had to do is look for which com port to use , top left, set up - set com port , i just changed them until i had a signal,

the only prob i have is i think the latancy timers are to high,
but i'm not that technical to slow them down,
i'm sure someone will point you in a clearer direction soon

John Wham was having trouble with Vista - although the interface drivers were reporting it as a COM port ES reported that "com port inactive". The problem was that an old version of ES (2003 vintage which, amongst other things, you could only select com ports 1 to 4) was being run and once it was replaced with Ver 0.10.12.71 there was no problem.

Thanks to Geoff (and Bob) for setting up my Vista PC for ElanScan (and to Specky for access to his car to test it). Hopefully I'll now be able to get some more scans which I've been unable to do since my old serial-port PC went belly up several years ago.

I agree with John re Vista and having recently got Windows 7 I can't say that that is an impovement on Vista in terms of intuition or handling!

I think I'll be running elanscan off my old XP laptop!

I've just tried to run ES on my laptop for the first time since re-installing Windows (v7 64-bit)
I don't know how I got it running before because it won't allow me to install one of the drivers I had.

I googled 'FTDI drivers' & found this
As mentioned earlier, I had to install it twice but the laptop now sees the cable fine.
Now to test it on an Elan...

:? So if I was looking to get an old laptop to run ES (I am) would it be advisable to get one that is running XP to avoid grief :poke:
The last thing I want to do is to get one and then wish I'd got another
