Yea, I think you are correct. There is a return pipe to the filler neck but I can't see that it is enough for expansion.

Kinda related question here. What is the best way to unblock the drain pipe near the fuel filler cap? Mine is blocked and I keep finding water in there am worried about water getting into the fuel system. I've got a bit of sponge in at the moment.

I use a piece of 0.8mm MIG welding wire - it will push down the pipe and is rigid enough to go round the kink without causing any problems.

I got so fed up with the pipe clogging up that i keep a length of welding wire wrapped round the filler neck and feeding down the drain pipe.

There is enough clearance to allow water to drain away, but if it gets clogged with leaf debris (we live on a hill, opposite a park) a quick wiggle soon empties out the water.

I had trouble getting the wire round the bend, having said that mine wasn't blocked, but you can do it.

Test with water or WD40 to see if there’s a way through.

Try a small screwdriver in the hole without doing any damage, it should go down about 1½” to the bend. You may need to clean it out from the top.

Try pushing the wire up the pipe.

When it comes to getting the wire in from the top it needs to have a bend in it about a ¼” from the end and the bend needs to be pointing in the right direction...a bit of trial and error but generally away from you and to the left as you are stand at the side of the car...have another go.

Mine was plugged solid, i simply connected an air nozzle to the local garages air line (when they were not looking ) and blew it out. It went with a 'POP' and a plug of crap splattered on the floor just in front of the rear wheel. Flushed it with soapy water and no problems since

Galsia, try getting one of them plastic straws, it should fit the hole pretty tight, then blow down the straw, it cleared mine straight away, then you can just keep a spare straw in the glove compartment. Try McDonalds, they have loads !

as posted once before use water absorbant in the tank. Overnight it will all go.
I could only clear my drain pipe with a length of 5mm electric wire, stuck it in and gave it a hard up and down plunge. other methods did not work for me.

Air compressor with the right adapter was the final method that I used. Had to do it regularly. No longer a problem to me as sadly the car has gone. Miss it but really like like the Z3 that we have now.
