Thought i`d start this thread up for alternative pads for the stock system for future reference. Hopefully others will post other Alternative part numbers and links

The front pads are the same as a Mark 1 1300 Astra, or an early Nova SR, but I don't know the part numbers. I think from memory that Ferodo's pattern number is 172.

From what I have read on here, performance upgrades are a good idea. I have gone for the Ferodo 2500 option, but have yet to fit them.

How about some alternatives for the rear pads? I don't want to upset the balance too much but I have bought better pads for the front so something with a little more bite at the rear would be welcome.

I would rather avoid Greenstuffs. I want to stop with cold brakes too.

I have the Greenstuffs and there crap from cold.And sometimes when they are warm you can get a bit out of shape when braking.I here the blue ceramic ones are realy good. :wink:

I think you are talking about fronts, or pads in general.
The only rears I can find are stock or greenstuffs. I would rather avoid both of them.

I have now found other alternatives for rears

EBC Redstuff DP3978C
EBC Yellowstuff DP4978R
Powerstop Evolution PWR-16-377

978 is the size code to look for with EBC, 377 is the size code for Powerstop.

Available from the US only

. For others, look up Chevrolet Lumina. The 1990 2.5 appears to use the same rear pads. You get much more choice than if you search for Lotus Elan.

In the US, the rear pads are the same as on 88-93 Buick Regal, 90-94 Chevy Lumina, 88-93 Pontiac Grand Prix, and 89-93 Olds Cutlass Supreme (I would personally use the Cutlass Supreme as the search query since all versions use the same rear pads. On some of the others, different versions/trim levels may have different brake setups.)

For the front pads, search using the 88-89 Pontiac Fiero.

I've found that the 377 size code is true for most brands (in the US anyway). Raybestos, Durastop, Wearever, etc, all use it.

For the fronts, the EBC size code is 325, most other brands, it's 378.

Good to know. It may come in useful at some time. If you could find out what Renault they are for, it may be possible to cross-reference them for some more alternatives.

These pads are manufactured by Renault, and sold under their `all makes` brand, Motrio. These particular pads are actually listed as an application for:

Opel Ascona, Vectra, Corsa, and Astra 2.0i.

They are high quality, just OE spec and not anything trick (and very cheap). See the picture below ----

I`ve just ordered a pair of front disks, again a Vauxhall / Opel application, i`m sure they`re correct for the Elan and again are high quality / cheap. If they are correct i`ll post the part nos.

I`ve got a huge Motrio book so i can cross reference numbers back and forward.

PAGID part number is E9521 (RS4-2)

UK suppliers are:

Price around £110 plus VAT - much more expensive than anything else but much much better too. On the rear mine work fine with EBC Blackstuff, ref DP978

Concur with PAGID pads. Best option without upgrading caliper.

Looking at the spares manual at my local parts shop, it seems that the Elan shares its rear pads with an Oldsmobile, although I'm not sure which model. They still come in at £45.00 though

I need to go back tomorrow for some new rolled pins for my front calipers, so I will find out then (silly me for thinking that they might come with the reconditioned calipers I bought from SJ Sports Cars on Friday, but they get a thumbs up for despatching after a phone call at 4pm on a Friday for a Saturday delivery).

And whilst I'm at it with the big thumbs, extra big thumbs for Sy for uploading every single manual possible for the Lotus Elan, it's been a big help after my MOT failure (on Friday morning, can you spot a pattern here?).

I won't get started on whoever bodged my front brakes before I owned the car - half worn green stuff pads on the right, completely worn stock pads on left were just the start of it...
