Stick on number plate

Postby antelope » Fri 10.09.2010, 14:48

Has anyone taken the front number plate off and replaced it with a stick on version? I imagine it would look better perhaps? ANd the shape of the front end lends itself as the stick on won't be too inclined to the horizontal.

I've thought about it but never got further than that.

I think it would look even better on the bonnet as per the E-type but I gather this would be illegal these days as it is not in a vertical plane. Correct me if I'm wrong Dapinky ;-)

Mark, unfortunately you're correct :(

Due to the age of the elan, the plate has to be fitted in a vertical plane, and have reflective background. Back in the days of the E tpye, it was legal to do.

That said, I've seen plenty of cars with numbers stuck on (MX5's Lotus Elite/Eclat) and never thought about pulling them over for it - but it all depends on the copper who sees it, I suppose, and what they view as important.

My view is that as long as it's readable with ease, then it isn't a huge issue, but it is unlawfull.

The problem is that the best place for such a plate would be exactly where the nose badge now is.

It's one of those odd bits of law that England is full of!

The positioning of the plate is designated under "Road Vehicle Licensing Regulations", and the MOT test doesn't concern them - but it is done under the Road Traffic Act and "Construction & Use Regulations".....

As such, technically a car will pass an MOT with the numbers scribbled in chalk on a blackboard held on (securely!) with chewing gum - as long as the script is correct, and the plate isn't dangerous......

....however, to comply with the Licensing Regs, it has to be vertical, reflective, etc etc etc

Got a stick on plate on my elan. it is in the same place as the original, so it is vertical, but not flat. Passes MOT evry year.

Failed last year on the rear number plate not being secure and vertical

A stick on would fit on that cross section above the one holding the indicators wouldn't it? Not quite the e type effect, but maybe an improvement.

A guy I know has been driving around in his Corvette Z06 for a couple of years with a standard front plate... sat on his dashboard inside the windscreen. Nothing whatsoever on the front of the car. I'm going to laugh the day he gets in trouble for it, but so far this has failed to happen. And yes, we've told him to get it sorted.

I knew a guy with an MR2 did the same - ran with it so long that the Sun had melted it into the shape of the dash. He was never stopped - and never got any speeding fines either :P
I just know if I tried it I'd get pulled on day 1

Interesting, what would the fine be for breaking construction and use regulations with a plate on the dash that probably can't be read easily by a camera (maybe 60£ and no points?) as opposed to a speeding fine with a standard plate and getting points? Is the trade off worth looking at?

When washing the car have some of you accidentally sprayed the hose upwards on the rear plate cover and had foggy mist to deal with?...

I’m just about to fit a new number plate at the front, and wondered …

Is there a reason for the UK front number plate screws being at 14½” centres … as opposed to 19” ish?

Is the body thickness uniform across the front bumper?

Has anyone got the screws in the “corner” of the plate rather than at 14½?”

Thanks

Thanks Dave,

I was just concerned they may have fitted some blocks at 14" ... and have it paper thin where the screws ought to have been ... away from the letters ... and near enough to the end for the plate to follow the line on the bumper.

Does anyone else have them at the ends?

Mine are at 15.75" centres and always have been, going by the fact that there are no other holes in the bumper. :?

I think the thing with plod is screws put in places they wouldnt normally be to suit vanity plates.....
i thing you can stick them at any centre you like but if they are not symetrical then it becomes obvious....
as for on your bonnet....personally I dont like the look.......
on the 67 theyre fixed to the front grill.......under the bumper.....hardly visible at all....certainly not by cameras....but legal for that 'age' of car......
if your talking bad number plates....just remember the alfa 156....they designed the front end....then thought oh sh!te where do we put the number plate....ouch...looks good without....looks fugly with..(the front end that is)
:-D

Gareth,

I didn’t imagine there’d be a legal requirement for hole spacing … :D

I don’t like the look of it on the bonnet either … I laid the new plastic one just above the badge and it’s the only thing you see when you look at the front of the car.

I know what you mean about the Alfa’s.
