Still playing around with this, Bob, would this solve the parking brake problem ?? (with a little bit of modification for the latch spring)

[quote="bobbrown"][quote="esprit888"]Bob, This may sound like (and probably is) a dumb question but the Saab has discs on all four corners. With your rear hub kit could the rears also be replaced with the same Saab/Vectra rear brake upgrade ?

In a nut shell No as the rear handbrake on the MkI Saab/Vectra uses a combined disc/drum and is too deep to get in and the MkII does have a combined handbrake caliper but it will not fit. due to mounting restrictions.

Dual circuit brakes so two lines run to the rear!

Isn't it a single circuit with one line being fluid source?

Not sure about FED cars but ours have two lines running to the rear as it is a diagonally split sytem with one half of the master cylinder operating the front left and right rear and the other half the other two.

Yes, the Fed system is one front and one rear per circuit.

The connections at the BMC are a little different with only 3 lines going to the BMC. There is a "Tee" fitting just below to get the 4th line connected.

I see the hydraulic HB lever as a single circuit. The front hose id for the fluid reservoir/source and the rear goes to the brakes. Thus, this wouldn't work for our cars?

True enough but if it was tied in prior to its split (just after the pipe exits the MC) it may work, although it would lock one front and the opposite side rear

A couple of points worth mentioning (or not, as you see fit!)......

......in the UK there can be problems with a handbrake which is hydraulic when it comes to the MOT test......

.....the 'official manual' (see here) is open to a variety of interpretations as to what is a 'solely hydraulic' system, and what is a 'hydraulically assisted mechanical'.

My way of looking at it is this.......

as long as the hydraulics operate a mechanical bit at the end (and it all works), then it is okay, after all, the only totally hydraulic brake system i can thing of is to drive your car into a river, as there is always a mechanical bit. :?

I have used such systems on rally cars for years and never had a problem, even with 'fly-off' systems, when it comes to MOT time - but i have heard of others who have great difficulty in finding a 'friendly' tester.......

.....that said, the idea above for having the handbrake work on one front and one rear wheel is legal - there is nowt to say it has to both be on the same axle - but it may cause a bit of a problem with the 'balance' test
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Of course, you could get a bit crazy and swap the single system BMC for a tandom BMC and lock up all 4 wheels...

A lot of big trucks use a hydraulic parking brake system but they isolate the rears from the front.

I often wondered about the logic with the way Lotus split up the brake circuits as the front do the major work and having one front fail would make controlling the car difficult at best in the event of a hydraulic failure at speed.

If the front circuit failed, I admit it would be hard stopping, especially with the limit valves in the rear, but, at least, it would be balanced.

I am VERY fortunate to live in a City that has no mandatory annual (MOT or otherwise) mechancial inspections (you should see some of the crap driving around  ) and no air care/emissions testing so basically once its off the lot you can do what you like with it, within reason.

could be done with one of these

you'd probably be best plumbing it after the proportioning valves.
Would be tricky to do with the current handbrake lever as it is a pull action

Hmmm, looks way better Bob (do you ever sleep? :) ) Remember this was so i could use the Saab/Vectra rears as well as the fronts but its likely to cost more than a hi spec upgrade at this rate :D
