turbo replacement

recently there was smoke again after my engine rebuilt, and this time i have narrowed down to a leak in the turbo.
i am thinking of changing the turbo and have trouble finding a new one...
i'm not keen with a used turbo cos i'll never know the condition and am not sure if rebuilding will be a good idea.
i've tried searching the net for a new turbo but couldn't find any..
anyone has bought a new turbo before?
alternatively, is there any other suitable turbos that is just plug and play(probably wishful thinking on my part)

I think finding a new one is going to be very very difficult if not impossible.

This one is cheap enough and should fit Link not sure if it is survacable but at that price you could rebuild it assuming the compressor, inducer wheels and shaft are OK

These should be similar linkand have asked the guy for some more details. OK its 2 but if they are correct then you would have no problem selling one on as they are new.
Edit NOT an option as the guy cam back to me and these are not water cooled.

You may want to see if you can find a new cartridge as this replaces all but either end which is what Fetnas did with his last year
FYI this is the stock turbo sizes for the compressor wheel and turbine.

I assume you mean the part just after the turbine which seals the exhaust side

This one is OK as the groove closest the turbine is square but can end up rounded and you will not be abe to keep the oil in hence the smoke
As for the the turbo on ebay you pay your money and take you chance but it is cheap enough then you do not lose too much and you have a good starting point for a rebuild and may save you money but its your call.
A GT2554 will still introduce more turbo lag than the current IHI turbo as the turbine is that much larger in diameter and thus the weight increase and I do not think you can off set the extra weight v ball bearing as the weight will have a bigger impact than the bearings.

BTW does this mean your engine rebuild was not really necessary?

i have not gotten a chance to see the turbo yet, but according to my mech the shaft is worn and oil is leaking because of that. will not be able to do much at the moment cos my mechanic's partner just passed away and they are still busy with the funeral...

i'm not particularly keen to change to a garrett now unless it is absolutely necessary, as i would like to get a feel of the elan on stock specs before i consider what i would like to improve.

the engine rebuilt was still necessary, as the piston was not fitting tightly. funny thing is we did not see any oil at the turbo outlet when we dismantled the engine.

nevertheless, if i'm still unable to locate a new or newish turbo, i'll probably just buy the one on ebay... i really regret not having taken the advise and bought the turbo from abmunro...

So I could not find any new turbo, not even the RHB5 VI78. I have tried to contact Dave at lotusm100parts. He will check and revert over the weekend. Crossing my fingers that he at least has a good used one .

If you need this sent on I do not mind doing it as I have sent stuff to Singapore in the past.
I can check it over before shipping to make sure it is OK or at least as far as an external examination is concerned and check the shaft for play.

I just wanted to add that last year I was in a similar position with a turbo that finally died. In the end I sent two secondhand turbos off to Turbo Technics www.turbotechnics.com 01604 705050. These had been working when they were removed from their owners cars but in Turbo Technics view they were just too far gone to salvaged or rebuilt. Over the years they have done quite a few Elan turbos but told me that they are getting to an age now where they are becoming increasingly difficult to rebuild cheaply. They offered to build me a completely new one or use the one i sent and replace everything inside plus some of the casing. I opted for the latter and they did a great job but it cost £625 + VAT. (price as at June 2010). When they sent it back it looked totally new to me and they guaranteed it 2 years. Like any secondhand part its a bit of a gamble from ebay but it may be worth asking Turbo Technics if they can build you a new one.
