Stainless steel gear shift cables

Postby bobbrown » Fri 29.04.2011, 00:17

Having looked at the last incarnation of the AB cables I was not overly impressed with the quaility or workmanship.
With this in mind I have been working on the gear cables in stainless steel.
These are standard cables all be it length specific with an adapter for the brackets and rod ends to connect to the gear lever and gear box.
This should eliminate any stiffness which could be due to the lack of allowances for misalignment as these cables will allow 8 degrees and the rod ends 13 degrees
The weak link in the cables has been eliminated by removing the plastic parts that fail and replacing them in metal.
A cable for the main selector has been fitted to a member’s car for testing along with another set that are being test fitted.
The main selector cable is working fine and I will be supplying a cross gate cable to complete that setup.

At present I have only done cables for the SE but I see not reason why they can not be adapted for the S2 type as it is only the gearbox end that is different but will need a pair of S2 cables be they whole or broken as patterns.

I have looked at Dave's short shift kit with some helpful input from Dave and these cables will work with that as well.

These are easy to produce and although the cable cost, just the cable not including the fittings etc, on a one off are about £89.00 each.
If this was take to a group buy I would expect this cost to come down, the stainless steel rod ends are £7.00 each (purchasing 25 + ) so 4 of those and the adapters for the brackets plus some spaces say £25.00. the total price is likley to be in the order of £130.00 so on par with the standard cables and the AB offering.
They would be lower in cost if I used plated steel cables but do not see the point as they will only go rusty.
As far as strength is concerned they have a working load of 70kg push and 100kg pull note this is working loads not the breaking load as that is a lot lot higher.

More pictures to follow but need to gauge the interest before going to a group buy

Just curious - has anyone had a set of AB cables fail?

Pardon my inability to read clearly, but is that £130 per cable, or £130 for the pair?

per cable or £260 the pair but is dependant on how much I can get the cables for if I buy 20 plus and I have been conservative.

FYI: Standard SE cables are £134.00 each AB Cables are about £123.00 each (no allowance for duty) but all of these are plated steel, standard ones break, and I was not happy with the standard of the latest AB cables.
Also the AB cables do not really allow for the misalignment that occurs as you select 1st/2nd or 5th as the selector on the gearbox moves thus putting a strain on the pin.

The first prototype has been fitted, a few minor modifications are needed, but nothing that is to difficult, one other car is running around with the main shift cable fitted and working well other cable to follow. I will iron out all the details and the little problem areas and look at getting some firm prices on the cables themselves.
These cables are not stiff and do self centre as the rod end allow for a large amount of misalignment which I think is the problem when they are stiff and do not self center.

I have asked the cable company on their price break points and it starts at 50 so if we can get to 25 sets then the price does drop to £210.00 the pair complete plus delivery or £218.00 delivered.

I am looking into S2 cables and now have some measurements to work with, so will see how it goes.
