I think the biggest problem with the turbo on the Elan is the fact it is now obsolete and parts are getting harder to get hold of.
OK bearings and a few other parts are not too bad to get hold of but the major problem is the main shaft as it carries the oil seal for the exhaust end and can wear, once it is worn that is where the cost goes up big time hence the differences in the price.

Pecks fitted a second hand one that appeared in good condition as I ported it for him as his shaft was badly worn, Fetnas fitted a new center cartridge to his that he purchased from the USA cost him about £250.00 if memory cell is working, so there are options but not so easy to find now.
I can see as time goes on these Turbos are going to be more difficult to repair as the spares dry up.
One thing people may want to consider is getting their turbo's overhauled before they have a problem with them as they do not last for ever and you may catch the shaft before problems arise.
