Replace or repair...

Postby Stef » Tue 13.09.2011, 07:54

OK, So Blipi work has to come in priorities and her turbo needs to be put towards the top of the list :|

After just freeing her wastegate I'm still down on boost and I'm sure her oil is being lunched through the turbo. 20 years old and 150k miles I guess it is to be expected!

Well, Turbo Technics are in Northampton who are supposed to be good, however will charge between £196 and £625, on top of which needs to have VAT added, to refub the turbo.

What would a replacement cost? Old or new.

Any other alternatives or tips?

That's disappointing but not entirely surprising.
I can't make any recommendations though.

Cor Blimey Stef!

That's quite a spread for an estimate. £196 and it would be a no-brainer for me - tooth sucking, perhaps, but no cardiac arrest.

£625 and my wallet would ache!

They weren't exactly friendly in tone with their email either. I'd asked if they had expereience with M100 turbos which had no comment back, this is what I got:

'The price to repair would range between £195.00 and could go up to £625.00+VAT depending on the extent of the needed work.'

It doesn't usually bother me much, but I do feel common courtesys of Dear xxx, Thanks for your enquiry etc would have been appropriate on a first contact.

Have been put off...

The question you need to ask them is are the refurb parts oem or chinese replicas........the chinese bits fit and work and will bring the budget down.....however.....they wont last long......
Just done all this for my saab.......
What I did find is that theyre all pretty similar price wise.....starting at £185 upwards.....just depends on how knackered and what needs doing..........

Nope that was a different place who actually did a good job on mine (cheap if you paid cash, too) Grahams was an upgrade and they weren't prepared to warrant the work IIRC

I'm not defending them but name and shame rules etc...

I think the biggest problem with the turbo on the Elan is the fact it is now obsolete and parts are getting harder to get hold of.
OK bearings and a few other parts are not too bad to get hold of but the major problem is the main shaft as it carries the oil seal for the exhaust end and can wear, once it is worn that is where the cost goes up big time hence the differences in the price.
A good shaft

Worn shaft the groove that carries the seal is no longer square!

Pecks fitted a second hand one that appeared in good condition as I ported it for him as his shaft was badly worn, Fetnas fitted a new center cartridge to his that he purchased from the USA cost him about £250.00 if memory cell is working, so there are options but not so easy to find now.
I can see as time goes on these Turbos are going to be more difficult to repair as the spares dry up.

One thing people may want to consider is getting their turbo's overhauled before they have a problem with them as they do not last for ever and you may catch the shaft before problems arise.

Bob

BTW SJ do list a recon turbo SJ100E0003 at £495.00 + vat + delivery no doubt service exchange.

So considering Blipi does get through oil when booted, I suspect I'm in need of a good shaft

SJ maybe providing the better option so far. Still a big hit

It's a bit scary to have to take her turbo somewhere with such a broad bill bracket. I'll also have the issue of firstly not being able to take her turbo off myself to deliver, and secondly needing a car while the work is done!

That's not the main reason, it's just I do not like turbo lag.

Stef,

One would suppose that the SJ option does have some benefits assuming they send you a recon turbo before you need to send yours back as it means you should be able to get it replaced in the one hit rather than having to send it some where and wait while they overhaul it. I would think Blipi could be turned around in a couple of days rather than a couple of weeks.
One other point to consider is getting the waste gate ported while you’re at it as it will have no detrimental effect on the car and if you change the exhaust you are one step ahead.
If you want the waste gate ported I can do it here, does not take very long as I take the snail off and put a milling cutter down the hole and taking the snail off a reconditioned turbo should be a POP.

The SJ option is looking best. Hopefully the whole thing will be reconditioned like new and not just repaired bits that need it.

Thanks for the offer Bob, not entirely sure on what this wastegate porting thing is, however, I'll take your advice.

Blipi is currently still driving so I'm not desperate yet but will get done when timing is right, hopefully by the New Year.

Thanks!

Have a read of Enright's turbo / plumbing analogy thread. Informative & amusing.

Jimbo had a turbo for sale last year. Don't know if he sold it on or put it back in after the LGM upgrade :?:

Luca is/was parting a car in Italy and Andy is/was parting Ailwyn's red scrapper in Inverness. Either or both might still have the turbo :?:

Stef,
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=19705&p=252959&hilit=Andy_J#p252959

He is andy_m100 on ebay. He's not listing anything at the moment, so give him a PM.
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=57

You may remember him from trying to balance his Elan on top of a dry stane dyke in Inverness a few years ago about the same time Andrew Ennis's S2 managed to jump one.
