Elan turbo SE - Heating not working?

Postby Sifly » Fri 03.08.2012, 16:19

The engine on the elan seems to run fairly cool when driving, at about 1 quarter up the guage. However, the temp increases up to around 2 thirds when the car is left idling for a few mins before the fan kicks in. The main issue is that even when the temp has increased, with the heating set to max and the blower on, the air comming out is barely tepid?!

The car has done 80k and runs great otherwise?

Any ideas??

Your car is fine,

The temperature of the Elan sits at the quarter Mark... And the fans kick in at 3/4 mark. Several  people have replaced the sensing switch for one that operates at a lower temperature, thus the fans switch on earlier.

You're heating system sounds fine, the Elan requires forward motion to create hot air in the cabin, I'm gonna guess you were stationary when the engine was getting a little to warm for comfort...

Maybe heater valve stuck in closed position? The origional ones are known to sieze up. Several plastic ones are availabe. Try Braydon mptors volvo part # 51.7896 costs about £10 check out the wiki

I used AC delco part # 12515169 that I bought locally and works fine. see this thread here

If it looks like this is the problem and have trouble getting 1 I have a spare

Not sure how good the elan is at blowing hot air into the cabin in the UK but here mine has no problem with supplying hot air. Getting it to blow cool is a bit of an issue !!

Hi Guys

Brilliant, thanks for the information. It's not causing any major problem, I only use the car on nice sunny days, so dont really need the heating on much, but was just playing around after seeing how cool the engine was running fearing a serious issue brewing!

I will get it looked into at the next service.

Lovely and toasty with forward motion, parked up on the Friday night carpark which is the M25, it's basically ambient.
