edit: This was posted BEFORE the prior rant from DROMONG. I stand by my earlier comment regarding the Renault, no, Fiat, no, "I don't know whatthey are" seals that had everyone ordering seals that didn't solve anything.

It is a free marketplace and EVERYONE is free to sell anything for any price. I am glad you found something you can turn into a sellable product. Just STOP telling everyone how hard you work and how you are risking your life working with such toxic compounds. Only a fool would knowingly risk their health for a few quid. I have several friends with COPD and they would give anything and everything to have their health back.

That may be but they are still used parts and made from the type of rubber that hardens over time.

The lucky 10 or so buyers might have a great solution, but instead, he should have looked into getting them manufactured - then the price per set would have been much lower, he wouldn't be complaining about how much his life has been shortened and EVERYONE would have a chance to have the "great improvement". Most members offer solutions for their cost or thereabouts, but all I see is someone that got the material for FREE selling it off in small sections for ove a hundreds pounds per pair.

If getting new seals manufactured is outside Jamie's resources, offering a sample to someone that COULD make it happen never came up. No, he actually refused to provide a remnant to several people that asked for some. I wasn't one of them because I still think the original seals are fine if the doors, windows and hood are adjusted correctly.

What is my interest in the entire project? NONE but I know Wayne has invested several thousand dollars to move the seal project along only to be thwarted by those that say they only want a different solution. And everyone wonders why parts are going obsolete so quickly? Without the full support of the group, nobody can afford to make anything that will replace the now obsolete original parts. This is just a topic that clearly shows what happens when people take their eyes off the target.

It is amazing how a few fudged seals from another car has ruined the plans to have NEW, Factory Original seals available for the next 10 years or so.

Your response Brit-car-nut is entirely predictable, you are a very sad, desperate and jealous man, you have lied and tried your wholly best to defame me because you don't like what ive achieved, so one man making a few pairs of seals has wiped out all the chance of a company making them, man you are utterly pathetic, cant you see people are now laughing at you, you are the laughing stock of this board now and you only have yourself to blame.

Without a shadow of a doubt this is the most jealous man that posts on this forum, and his greed for money is so blatantly obvious, that's why he could not bear it any longer and had to concoct a story and make libellous false statements against me, what an utterly shocking disgraceful way to treat another member of the board, Brit-car-nut you are only digging a deeper hole for yourself, and I don't care who you think you are, you don't scare me and I will stand up to your derogatory remarks, I will speak the truth about you and defend myself from your hostile comments, you are nothing to me other than a Liar.

"It is amazing how a few fudged seals from another car has ruined the plans to have NEW, Factory Original seals available for the next 10 years or so",

and, "I have friends with COPD, what on Earth has that got to do with anything?", "I have no interest in the entire project" Really?, why the all out slur on me then?,

come on folks seriously?, this guy is now getting truly desperate to attack me and bring a stop to anything ive done to help others by making statements like that.

You are a complete liar and have made up stories about me to try and stop people from making their own decisions what they want to do regarding their own cars, you are scaremongering and making up pathetic crap, you need to invest in a visit to the real world, you are talking about bits of fricking rubber and the future of Elans as if it is some life and death subject, holy s**t man you seriously need to wake up, its a CAR!, not the future cure for a mass epidemic for the human race, you are way out of touch with reality and you are BANG out of order for the libellous statements you have levelled at me, I wont be commenting anymore on this as for one, i don't need to as its plainly obvious to anyone reading this what a complete fool you are, and two i don't want it to get deleted so that people can read about you and see what type of character you really are, Disgraceful, Pathetic, jealous Man.Get a life, End of.

PS (This isn't another comment about "the subject"), just a thanks to all the PM's I have had regarding the "slur" I have had to endure tonight, I appreciate all the messages of support and totally understand nobody getting involved, after all that is the sort vitriolic behaviour reserved for things like facebook, not LEC!.

I've only got of the airplane a few hours ago having had a wonderful relaxing couple of weeks sunbathing, eating, diving, smoking fat cigars and swigging rhum in Cuba (all very healthy, you know!) and as i can't yet sleep, I thought I'd do a bit of catching up on LEC (can't face Faecesbook yet!)....

...I'm just wondering where all the other Moderators have gone on their hols this week????? [all said with tongue firmly in cheek - I know whats happening behind the scenes ;-) ]

Anyway, enough of my recent history.... lets earn my Moderators' salary......

.....

.....

.....

Well, that covers my salary - so I'll try doing some typing

Firstly, I am NOT going to remove any posts / delete any posts / edit any posts AT THIS STAGE - I will merely state some things I have always stated, and will continue to espouse.

1) This is a publicly-viewable forum, and anyone who posts anything must expect it to remain publically viewable (As my good friend Tim (Now SIr Tim!) Berners-Lee said when he first invented the WWW - "There can be no expectation of privacy on the internet, once you hit the [send] button It will be there for ever, for anyone [who knows how] to find".

2) We live (most, if not all of us) in a Democratic society where many of us have fought for the right to hold an opinion, and to expess that opinion in Freedom of Speech.... I may not like your view, but I'll fight anyone who says you're not entitled to hold and/or express it.

3) That said, we also live in a land bound by Laws, and in a Society held together my moral standards - so if you wish to express yourself, you do so at whatever risks you deem worthy of taking (I know little of Federal Law, but a fair bit of UK Law - enough to know that compliance with one doesn't guarantee compliance with another  ).

4) In our 'Democratic Society' we hold the principles of 'freedom to trade' - and to set our own price for any item we wish to offer - at the end of the day, it will find it's own level, and if it happens to be a suitable product for a fair price, it will do so - whether it be OE or 'improved'.....

5) We each own our own cars (bad English, please excuse me, I'm a tad jet-lagged), and can do with them as we wish (as long as it's legal!) - I certainly don't like all the modifications done to all the cars (not just elans) which I have seen over the years, but as in the Freedom of Speech - it's up to the individual. You may or may not like what I have done to mine, but I don't care too much - it serves my purposes.

6) That's about it really - from a Moderator point of view - - - - please feel free to say as much or as little as you wish, but I would suggest that you may wish to call it a bit of a day for now on the personal [percieved? Intended? Suggested? Implied?] insults - but i can't stop you {well, yes I CAN, but I WON'T - that old Freedom bit again!!!!}.

Anyway, back to the point of the thread, and the question asked......

....Jamie,

If you have developed an item which people want to buy, then good on you for taking the time and effort to do it - I know what it's like to spend hours playing around just for the feeling of satisfaction in the end product (oooh, errr, ).

...And I'd be interested in a set of 'B' post seals (Falling-pillar seals as Lotus would have called them  ) at some stage, if the price is suitable for me at that time :D
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Dave, I don't need to say anymore publicly about what was thrown at me here, the stack of PM's ive had is proof if ever it was needed that further comment from me is not necessary, the posts above this have been read by many people of the board and will continue to be read for a while to come as I will be continuing with this project irrespective of anyone who thinks they can bully me to "STOP", and I will keep it updated.

Right back on topic, as I said I have been endeavouring in my spare time to develop a way of making these easier to construct, and I can happily say I have today made some seriously good advances, basically what I have done is managed to make the Falling pillar, Intermediate, and the side section of the Header seal all the same type of rubber and they all match the same look and design all the way round the glass, this new way of doing them looks really promising and so far has taken a lot less effort than previous designs I have done, obviously to fit these 3 seals it is necessary to make a join with the side part of the header seal to the front part, as at this time as I have yet to locate a suitable rubber for the front ( it will come :D ), however if your side part is perished then it is only going to improve it anyway but other than that join ( the join is simple and can hardly even be seen) there are absolutely no "modifications" needed to fit them meaning it can all go back to standard without any issues at all, the ones I fitted today look superb with a really fresh appearance and what looks like at this stage fantastic sealing to the window, they will get the hose treatment in due course once I have made final adjustments hopefully tomorrow.

Update to follow whereupon you will be free to use your own judgment as to whether its good ,bad or otherwise, off course you may have made your mind up already. :-D

May I throw a thought in the discussion from the view of your brothers and sisters in law... : if you set them on eBay there will be many colleagues who watch the scene who do not know that this will be a test fly. So you will have the situation that many people will bid on this occasion just to get this lonely set. This will rise the price in a height which isn't realistic if there are many sets afterwards who will come.

Calculate it proper like every business case with the materials you have to buy, the labour and of course (!) some amount of cash for your development, risk, stock, ... And set the price. Simple as it is.

Hope you will progress with the work. :)

Absolutely correct my Brother :D , I don't think I will be going down that route anyway mate, it smacks of something I just don't like the taste of, wait and see how these new designs pan out and if they are good and I am able to produce enough of them we will work something out for the benefit of forum members, and of course the ultimate aim is to be able to find something that is easy enough to assemble that folks can do their own, I am very optimistic that will be happening in due course, and after the recent "events" shall we say I am even more determined to find a viable alternative to "spongebobs" which people can replicate themselves.

Watch this space.

:agree:

Price it at a level that your conscience will allow, cover your costs and allow enough profit for it to be worth doing.

When I first read this post I was rather sadden by it. On reflection it reflects a rather healthy situation in our club. Two members are prepared to invest considerable time and money to give people a solution to the seal problem which afflicts almost every Elan currently on the road. If both succeed than we will have a choice of solutions both with different merits, if not than our chances of finding one acceptable solution have been doubled. Wayne has displayed a altruistic approach with the Hood covers and its clear from this thread that Jamie is of the same view and the general consensus is that a reasonable level of profit to cover risk, time expended etc needs to built in to the price. Guys we are all broadly in agreement so what's there not to like!.

For these reason I fully applaud and appreciate Jamies and Wayne efforts. It just a shame that the Handbags had to come out especially as this appears to be precipitated by comments from someone not directly involved in these projects . Of course as Dave commented everybody is entitled to free speech etc etc and would agree with mods decision there no need for this thread to be locked/removed.

I'm just going to get involved publicly rather than in the background, I think its best these things are out in the open. Got a bit hesitant about posting this but its written now, so I hope I don't offend anyone;

If I understand it correctly….

Wayne has invested a serious sum of money into these parts with a view to manufacturing enough for not only everybody just now, but everybody who might need in the future.

Jamie's got an interim solution that he is making by hand which is going to be limited by how many of the parts-bin pieces he has got in hand, or can continue to find.

Is that correct? In which case if those are the facts, unless Jamie's project suddenly turns out to be of a much more major nature than 8-10 sets, it shouldn't affect things much. But regardless of whether its 1, 5, 10, or 100 sets, I think (and I hope he already is/has) he should talk to Wayne about it.

Group Buys are hard to do on here, and thats no reflection on the community. I was always quite upfront about the fact I wasn't prepared to sink all my money into something in the first place - I simply couldn't afford the loss if anything went wrong, and at the time I was relatively new to the forum, the community and the procedure. Wayne on the contrary has always been extremely altruistic about putting up the costs himself. I certainly wouldn't like to see his investment and the benefits to the community at large jeopardised by this but with no indication as to scale or cost its hard to say whether they will be. The nature of the community here (and its happened once with Wayne) is that if he was left out of pocket, others of us would want to make up that loss. That community nature will be lost if people don't communicate.

I've had several moments where projects I am working on have been taken up by another party - my response was always to say well please confirm if you are serious, because the only reason I do these things is because nobody else IS, and I want the parts for myself and the only way to get them is to get a bulk load done. If another person is going to do a project, I think its reasonable to expect communication between the parties - none of these things have ever gone public because when I get approached, I ask "are you serious - if so go for it, please!" and nothing ever happens. I am always very clear that the one situation I don't want is that I am expending time and/or money, only for somebody else to pop up and do the same thing, splitting the benefits to all parties. In fairness everybody who has wanted to do things has either posted publicly or asked me what I would think if they were to take up one of my active or proposed Group Buys.

Jamie's project would benefit from some indication about the level of availability and price but its all rather veiled right now. I would be hesitant to back anything thats going to jeopardise funds Wayne has publicly expended - for close to a year he has been talking about this on open forum. Whereas this is quite new.

I also think the personal comments and threats are completely out of order, as is the intimation that this is going to turn into some kind of competition. If this is going to ruin Wayne's plans as stated above thats a great loss, and the cost of it can only really be evaluated if the quantities available, and the price of, this alternative, is made public. It wouldn't just affect the FP seals if that project stopped, but a lot of future seal projects too. Hence I am not surprised its got a little heated. (Before anybody says that Wayne's prices aren't up there now, I do understand why they are not, because until you know set-up costs and then quantities required, its hard for a complete new manufacture to price anything. But Wayne has produced several items before and the costs have been in line with what you would expect, so I think we all know, for the main part, where the pricing on that is headed).

I think it could have been avoided if the buy proposed in this thread was made crystal clear from the get-go and discussed with those already working to produce the same parts. I understand that its developed past its original intention and I think I can optimistically infer that something approaching clearer news is going to be posted soon, so I will hope this turns out better than it currently looks. As I said, doing Group Buys is difficult and I learnt a lot about dealing with the community from my first real one, the hubs.

Most people know how this is going to go I think, but I support the idea that its a free marketplace and an open forum, hence my comments here. I think the pricing and quantities available should be put upfront as soon as it is possible rather than asking the forum "how much would you pay?" - to which a concise answer has been given already:

Calculate it proper like every business case with the materials you have to buy, the labour and of course (!) some amount of cash for your development, risk, stock, ... And set the price. Simple as it is.

Everything made by John and Wayne has been of excellent quality and in some areas where items are critical to driver safety, its very important to continue to support people doing so. No disrespect to what Jamie is doing but I think the essence of what I am saying is that if communication is upfront and honest then these problems simply can't occur.

If you're going to make a profit on Group Buys, say so. My thoughts are that its completely reasonable to do so. I believe I made a princely £3.50 per hub. By putting the pricing up front on my hubs, I was given lots of (free) advice on how much they cost before, what to look out for when making them, etc and actually managed to virtually half the initial proposed price. If its done with the community's best interests at heart then everybody wins. Be honest about the time you are expending too, because every hour you spend on here helping somebody is unpaid, every hour you spend on developing the group buys is unpaid, and I think its only fair people should cover their time at the very least in making, packing and shipping items. If you have to spend money on a mask to deal with toxic fumes, that should be part of your price.

Jamie, I don't think anybody ever asked you to make a loss on this, but I would beg you to consider the impact on Wayne and discuss it with him personally because its going to impact on a lot of other work he seems to have planned if this is contentious enough to nix his current project which is close to completion.

I think that this is something of a challenge for us, actually. I know that many or most people disagree with me, but I think it is better to have a secure ongoing supply of rare parts supplied by someone who is making a profit on each item than an erratic supply (say, a group buy) where a few items are made at a time and supplied at cost. Maybe this is the capitalist in me, maybe this is an Elan owner who uses his car every day and wants to keep it on the road with an immediate supply of parts.

This sums it up perfectly but it misses one fact, that the demand is so low now for the parts that a capitalist approach to the matter is no longer practical. Well, it is, but the maths wouldn't work for a lot of us - develop a lifetime supply of obsolete parts for remaining owners would necessitate such a high price point that most would think it unfair, or gouging. But if you then have to sit on 70% of the stock for 10 years, your first 30% has to cover the whole order or a proportion you feel suitable - incorporating your overheads for the space the stock takes up - which means a 70% or more, profit margin suddenly becomes the de facto. Thats not "unfair" in commercial terms, but if it were proposed by a member of a community such as this, thats how it would be perceived.

We have to work together on stuff like this - we only just got out of the "dark ages" as somebody hilariously put it a while back - so please I'd ask that a couple wee kisses and hugs are shared and some communication entered into together with frank and honest public information put forward so the members here know whats going on with parts a lot of us sorely need. I think the fairest thing is to do what Wayne has done before, outline a price based on quantity for LEC members, and if you want to produce more and sell them on eBay for more, thats fair enough. Putting them to eBay first isn't community-minded, and neither is throwing a spanner in the works of somebody else's existing project, so I really hope some communication can ensure from a bad situation.

I'll be off the radar for a bit with the usual Edinburgh Festival stuff but if there is any news on my group buys I'll post it up.

Well there you go, this proves what I said in the reply to the venomous attack I received, that there must have been an "agenda" and "ulterior motive" behind it, but I was correct, and once again it all boils down to money!, I don't know the perpetrator and couldn't care less after what was thrown at me on here, im just an Elan enthusiast who enjoys creating stuff and if I can help other like minded guys in the process then that makes me happy.

Now the thing about the seals is this, I have been inspired to create something in EPDM rubber which not only waterproofs the car but just as importantly for me is to make the appearance of my car the very best I can, ive always been like that with all my cars I just have to make them as immaculate as is possible and sponge seals just don't cut it for me, I don't like them and I don't like they way they disintegrate, become waterlogged and split apart,my opinion on sponge seals is that they are a very poor product for such a classy car, others may/will have a different opinion and that's fine, but that's my main " motive", basically aesthetics.

So through my endeavours I have worked out something which can be used for falling/intermediate/and header side section, but shockingly this has stirred up a fairly nasty Hornets nest, now I don't go out my way to tread on anyones toes and nothing I have created has been anything to do with such a scenario, I was not even aware of any "group buy" until a couple of days ago, but now yet again I feel like I am being bullied for creating an "alternative".

So to put the facts down, here was the deal I intended for anyone who was interested......

I was on the verge of posting up a very inexpensive but fairly labour intensive solution which would make you're Elan more watertight than you could ever hope for and transform that "shot to bits" look for something really tidy and smart, and all for NOTHING!, yep totally FREE information/ pictures / how to do it and a FREE backup/advice via email/ PM /Mobile, providing you have some basic skills and an ability to work with your hands I was willing to give over all this information from the goodness of my heart and for NOWT, as for the actual monetary figures for the parts you would need to source to do it?, well provided you didn't go to a main dealer for the seal and got it from a late breaker (one seal will do both sides!!!!) (and the car is common as muck in the UK) you would be looking no more than 30 quid to transform your car!, now disregard all the lies and concocted crap that has been slung in my face on this board, that is my side of the story straight from the horses mouth, no lies, no bullsh#t.

But you know what, this whole setup is just crap I can do without, I don't need to be involved in any of it, I have a multitude of stuff going on in my life with a stack of varied interests and making seals for Elans is a very small part of my life, but not on here, its turned into a monstrosity and just a huge kick in the guts that I don't deserve, so I am going leave it up to you folks, it appears a lot of you don't like what I have achieved and was willing to share so you can argue among yourselves, I am not up for any more crap thrown at me for trying to help fellow enthusiasts, you are either unanimously agree to me sharing the information with no more slander and negative comments directed at me or we can just forget the whole episode. I think that's fair considering the differing views and opinions here because im not posting it up to get shot down in flames and blamed for this that and the other from lying twisted people I don't even know, ive had enough of that.

I will leave it to Forum members to decide.

Jamie.

I agree to you sharing the information, I hope you don't think anything that I posted was anything but an attempt to make sure we try and stay a good community - if you think it was slanderous, or negative, I apologise unreservedly. Hopefully others will agree similarly and we can come to unanimity.

:? It's a shame when someone's spent a lot of time and effort to solve what is a failure of the OEM part, we should be applauding his efforts.
Unfortunately it's seems all too easy and with little effort for people to tap away at their keyboards with an agenda of pick holes and criticising  here's a thought :poke: if you can't be constructive don't bother.
If someone has a negative comment I can just ignore it, but it must be difficult for Jamie given the time and effort he has put in.
Try and ignore the Twatts Jamie, there's still a good number of people on this forum that are very interested in what your doing.

Yet another thread that has descended into a petty argument.

If someone has similar idea I'm all ears but present it on your own thread and stick to it, people can then make their own minds up as to what they want to do, it's as easy as that, end of argument.

:agree:

As we seem to be emerging from the "dark ages", I have the utmost respect for anyone who has organised a group buy after the whole system was almost brought to its knees.

I am very interested in what Jamie is doing and would be very happy if he chooses to share the information.

We don't use phones, computers or televisions from the early 90's, why is there such a compulsion to use car components from that era? Many of us have fitted more modern brakes, hoses, lights etc, so a natural progression is to find a solution to the Elan's seal issues using technology that was not available to Lotus when the Elan was designed.

I know Wayne has done some great work for LEC and I would hate to see him out of pocket, perhaps some communication would produce something really spectacular.

While maybe not the right place to post this, I think it is time for a "Group Buy Fund".

We all contribute a small amount to be held by LEC, this is used to fund the initial costs of setting up a group buy. Once the group buy is up and running, the money is put back into the fund for the next time.

If you can't be a good example, then you might as well be a terrible warning

A very pertinent point indeed there Cliff, the fact is our Elans came out of Hethel leaking like sieves with sponge seals and they were brand new along with window guides etc etc,it is well documented that leaking seals were one of the biggest warranty issues for main dealers, but you have hit the nail on the head, more sponges may be an acceptable solution for some and that's fair enough but if anyone is willing to sink money into a project making replicas then surely the most sensible option would be to make those replicas with something good and up to date with current technology?, sponge seals are simply not the best solution, they may be the only solution available to most people at the current time but it cant be denied that compared to modern day high end car seals they are second rate to say the least.

Therefore if all the Elan owners who desperately need to replace theirs and are prepared to fund a substantial investment into developing new ones, would I not be right in saying it would just be madness not to go for something vastly superior to sponges designed way back in the last Century?, it just seems crazy in the modern day to go for something that we are all too well aware is a flawed and outdated material for car seals.

I know that all of our hood seals can be done with EPDM spectacularly well, their is no doubt about that whatsoever (the proof is sitting right here beside me if anyone wants to come and view you will be more than welcome, maybe even some homemade scones and tea if the Wifes in :P ) , simply put.. if you always use what you always had you will always get what you always got... leaking seals!, ok im just trying to add some humour to the subject ( sadly lacking in Doomsville lately :D )

But seriously guys there is a great solution out there for pennies if you are handy with your mitts, you shouldn't be sitting reading this you should be out rectifying the situation and in an ideal world I would be helping you achieve that wonderful goal and achievement, alas I have been told it may be "politically incorrect" to do so. WT?! Really? , well maybe its time to have a poll or something?, its looking like a lot of people on here are scared to voice an opinion on here these days so maybe a simple vote whereby you can tick "shove your rubber up your A pillar" or "Im a rubber fetishist I need those details now!" all in anonymity ?, gets done on other forums I know of so why not?, Im easy on the matter there is no monetary benefit for me either way, I'm just trying to help folk out but from what I detect on this board nowadays there is a "sinister" element buried deep within where monetary gain seems to rule way above Altruism to (Genuine) fellow Elan Owning/Driving Fanatics, all im my own opinion of course! ( an opinion which im not afraid to speak ,here or anywhere else, you will have gathered) :D .

Luvs n hugs n stuff ( Ive not been drinking BTW im teetotal  )

:bonk: I really can't understand why anybody wouldn't want to know how you obtain and make your seals, I for one am very interested as I was lucky enough to see your
seals on an Elan at Brooklands earlier in the year, and the owner was very pleased, they are so much more superior to the original sponges .

I'm more than happy to see the 'idiots guide' to this fix (it would have to be a simple guide for me to make them!) - I've never really liked the material used for the seals, and would much prefer rubber to sponge.....

....that said, if the OE shape could be made out of closed cell bubbles, we could maybe have the best of both worlds...

...anyone want to take that up???? :D

That would be me haha, I'm as you say very happy with the seals!

I understand some want to keep their cars as original as possible. These seals do not change the look of the Elan, they majorly improve the usability and as mine is a daily driver, reducing the chance of a wet knee before walking into work in a suit is great!

I bought a set of new intermediates when I first bought the car back in September 2013 and already the top layer is degrading and the sponge is cracking to a point that a chuck has come off on one side. Showing to me that these seals need to be made out of a more durable rubber if possible. Even if they were the same style just made out of EDPM they would be a vast improvement, Jamie's seals just have the added awesomeness of a lip that impresses me everything I look at my door closing.

Even if Jamie makes a few set of these seals, there will still be plenty of people interested in Wayne's sets.

Also less hugs and cuddles and more manly fist bumps and hand shakes haha
