Hood Tensioner Cables

Postby dermotbell » Mon 10.11.2014, 11:04

Hi all,
I am having a bit of trouble with my new hood. The tensioner cables are rotten on the old hood so I need some new or second hand ones. Anyone got spare or know where I could get some. Maybe there are cables from other car that could be used.

Biggest issue is that I am only in country till Sunday so need to move fast.

Hi Dermont

There are some other threads here where owners have posted how to do it, for instance THIS or THIS

You can use bicycle brake cables like I did.
These cables are normally too long, so you can cut them down to size...... I left the end that was already sealed, and routed that to the back of the car where the clamp is.
Then, on the front I made a small loop like on the original, and threaded two 4mm (depending on the thickness of the brake cables you use) nut on to the cables, and used a hammer to 'crimp' these....
Something like

I used heat shrinking tube to protect it (seeing as I had plenty in stock), others seem to use the the outer covering of electrical wires
This can then be pop riveted to the hood as per the original, or if you have no riveter, then you could use a nut and bolt.

Good luck
Dave

Dermot,

you need to move quickly, here!

(When I did mine I just used stainless steel brake/gear cables from Halfords - the sort for a pedal cycle.)

Edit - beaten to it whilst looking for the links 8)

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

incidentally, the name 'hood tensioner' is a bit of a misnoner...these cables only tighten the part of the hood that fits over the seals.

A lot of owners tend to tighten these too much, maybe mistakenly thinking it tightens the hood itself. They should be just tight enough to pull the hood down over the seals when it is closed.

Now got my hood on with cables fitted.

Trouble is the guy who did the hood wasn't expecting to have to bond the seals to the frame (modern cars clip in place as the rubber is hard).

Any tips on a good bonding agents for A, B and window top seal?

Hi Dermot,

I think most owners use Sikaflex or Tiger Seal.

I used some SILICONE SEALER (BLACK) (RTV732 from SJSPortscars, but I am not too sure if it is just a sealer or else a bonding agent.... does have the advantage that it is easy to remove the seals if you have to :D

Ok,

Had a look at B pillar and intermediate seals and the B pillar appear to be a nightmare. Tried getting seals to fit in chaanels and they feel like they're the wrong size.

Anybody fitted these and found a tool that would help?
