UK Photocard Licence

I'm working on a contract for a large company in Slough and reading their Annual Safety Report just saw that of their 1,400 drivers 450 had allowed their Photocard Licence to expire. Checked mine and ... - runs out April 2019 ! Where did 9 of that 10 years go??? Have you checked yours lately?

You can sign up to get a reminder from DVLA which arrives about a month before so there really is no excuse for forgetting. Its just that most people think their licence is for life rather than for the next 10 years. Until you get to 70 that is, ok then it's every 3 years

Just renewed mine on line. Very easy to do and only costs £14 which you can pay by credit card. You don't even need a photo or signature these days, providing you have a passport. And if you don't have a passport, just go down to your nearest, large post office and they will submit the application for you, including taking a new photo which cost an extra £3 or so

I should add that if you are over 60 then you will not get a full 10 year licence. You will only get a licence with the residual time remaining to your 70th birthday. So if you are 63 you will get 7 years for your money, if you are 66 you get 4 years and if you are 69.....

There were some people who claimed that they had lost some... Which the DVLA denied.

When I moved recently I checked, and found no mention of provisional MC entitlement... New license arrived and as if by magic it had appeared - I didn't have to say anything.

Was on TV years ago. A Police Motorcycle cop with 30 years service found his new Photocard Licence didn't include .... wait for it .... 'Motorcycles !
DVLA said he'd never had it but Constabulary had a photocopy of his paper licence but they were arguing they couldn't accept photocopies, having had the original and destroyed it ...

I did get a reminder.

I was 68 yrs 8 months when I renewed mine, so I got 16 months worth. Tough titty indeed.

You don't even need a photo when the deadline comes Giniw. Providing you have a current passport. The DVLA will scan in your passport photo and signature and it all appears, as if by magic, on your new pink plastic card. All you need, if you do it online, is £14 (£17 by post) and this can be taken from a debit or credit card. No need for a medical exam or driving test, although you have to disclose any medical problems

It's a different matter when you get to the ripe old age of 70 and there is a different field to fill in on line. Driving licences must be renewed every 3 years after 70 but they are free. You have to be able to meet the minimum eyesight requirements but that must also be a given if you are under 70 too As far as I am aware, there is no current requirement for full medical and/or driving test when you reach 70 but I'm not too worried about that for another 7 years

For me the process of renewal was very easy and the pink card dropped through my letter box within 5 days

PS I don't have a mobility category on my licence Jim, but then again, you are a bit older than me and your sciatic nerve has seen much better days See you at Castle Combe. Will you be bringing your Mazda Mobility scooter or your Lotus one ?

Yeah, I got my Photocard Licence online several years ago after a French Policeman had been a bit awkward about my 'old bit of paper 'and DVLA just used my passport photo. Great process and it lets you retain paper one to check the groups are all there.

My passport runs from July '09 to July '19 but my Driving Licence expires in April '19 (age! ) but it appears I can still renew it online using a passport photo taken in '09 when I had dark hair and a lot more of it ...

Also noticed we have a Euro flag with UK on the pink card... wonder if my new one will have a Union Jack. Bit ironic that a French company will produce new UK passports after Brexit ...

By April next year Jim? I'm pretty sure I'll not get a new (old blue) style passport in July '19. Press say late 2019 as they're trying to build in biometrics and iris recognition, which is why it went to Gemalto.

Rumour has it that when you apply for a passport you'll need to send an eyeball and a photo ....

Here, there is no time limit at all on the driver licence. Even the photo ... It's a bit strange as the id card has a time limit — though I think the time limit is more intended for when you are abroad, I think the French ID card time limit doesn't really apply when you are in France.
