Oil pipe to cooler burst. needing advice

Postby Tuga2112 » Fri 02.06.2023, 12:59

so.. after a whole faff about getting the car ready for cascle combe and failing at that, and ultimately having to re-tune up the engine. i think i must have a done a good job. because the title of the thread says it all... on the test run. the oil pipe burst.

i heard a strange noise when pullig out of a roundabout, and drove a little further, about 3-500m later the oil light comes on. i was particularly close to my known MOT garage, so i took it up to the door (another ~500m) running the engine as slowly as possible.

as far as while the engine ran. i didnt not notice any change in the sound so im hoping there is no damage.
ive got the towing of the car back home arranged. and Pinky has assured me the job of replacing the pipes is straight forward, now my concern is... what kind of damage may there be to the engine ? and how do i go on about confirming if im lucky or not??

all advice and previous experieces are welcome. even if its just links to other posts where this has been discussed.

Refit the new pipes and start it up...you'll know if you have 'immediate' damage. If it sounds relatively the same, just keep driving.

I'm about to do a suspension refresh and will be having these hoses redone just out of caution.

Given this context, that ticking sound from your facebook video could make sense? You'd have to pull the valve cover and inspect the cams (assuming the video and what you describe above are the same car). I'd hope some of the oil involved in the running the tappets would just be replaced by air (since it was low on oil), but I'm not exactly sure how our hydraulic tappets work. The worst case scenario would be rod knock, but I don't think I heard that in your video.

the video your refering to is from the 30th of may,
the ticking sound disappeared after an oil change as per HJ2 (probably got the order of the characters wrong) suggestion. it was a matter of idling for 3 minutes after oil change and the tapping was gone. :-)

there is another video more recently (1st Jun 6pm) where the car is running smooth althought it appears to be running rich

Happened to mine years back on the way to work in the gloom at 10mph traffic queue. The guy behind flashed me I slowed up checking everything saw the light come on keyed off.
Sound like you’ll need a set of big end shells minimum I just got away with it there was about a litre of sludge and crap still in the sump

im posting mostly on facebook the updates, i checked 4 big end bearings and 2 main bearings, they all dont seem to have any sign of damage worth worrying about.
meet yesterday at the NELOC gathering and other owners (with more experience than myself) commented thought the pictures that the bearings looked like "good condition considering its a 130k engine"

there was almoust no metal in the oil sump (see attached picture)

took the pipes to my local prop shaft specialist who claimed to be able to do the hidraulic fittings, and handed them over the pipes... estimated 90 quid bill is nearly 3 times my expectation, im hoping when its done the re-visited price is closer to half of that (fingers crossed)

ive been advised to replace the bearings under the perspective of "if your keeping it, and while your already there" however,... i rather take the bottom end of the engine out than the intake plenum... so all things considered i would estimate the amount of effort required to do the bearings is a bit less than removing the fuel tank and more than a complete 4 corner brake overhaul plus bleeding (yes, an easy task but surprisingly time consuming) ...

with that in mind, bearing replacement will be mostly dependent on prices instead of "how much effort" it takes to get to them...

seems like getting bearings requires me to measure them.. and im feeling too lazy for that... specially since everyone i spoke to said they looked fine for the age and wear of the engine... so. everything is being put back together and i will be putting the replaced oil pipes and fire up the car to find out if there is any problems or not..

im estimating to get to the bearings is probably a 2-3 hours of my time.. i can easily get them all out in 1 evening after work if i need to. then would have to wait for new ones delivered and another evening to fit everything...

fingers crossed ill be driving the Elan to work on thursday again
