Hose joints

I noticed a crusty deposite on my hose joint near the thermostat .
Split the hose and found this fun piece of aluminium.
It was weeping , but could have let go at any time . Lower joint near the " Y " piece was the same .
Replaced with some stainless ones now.

those are pretty crusty!! I think the one time a shop worked on my car (to install silicon hoses), they changed this piece out for something that was plastic and over the counter.

Two of these from Ebay fixed the issue for £5, nice and heavy stainless steel .
The old ones were tin foil thin in places , i don't think they were rated to last nearly 30 years .

Yep, there's one of these that disintegrates in the same way situated in the middle of the hose that feeds into the heater control valve - at the top of the pic:-



Believe me, it weeps after 32 years or so...

The current replacement hose is the one below below and costed me about £70 by the time it dropped on my doormat so I wish I'd known about these inserts at the time. I found I needed to replace the control valve at the same time since it fell apart in my hand, so I suppose the weep did me a favour - albeit an expensive one

Btw what size are they and what are they called? I'll be able to keep the hose 'on the shelf', now...

edit: I reckon a plastic connector (like that heater control valve) would be a longer-lasting method to join these pipes?

I measured them at 17mm and 75mm long .
Closest i could find in stainless steel was 17mm and 55mm , which is plenty long enough .
I replaced my heater valve 7 or 8 years ago with the plastic Volvo one , but i still have the original as it was in a surprisingly excellent condition .

I'd advise anyone 'doing' the Volvo heater valve upgrade to look at that hose join as well - and your solution might save loadsa people having to buy the expensive 'all-in' hose update.

edit: this pipe joiner is 14mm(dia) x 70mm and looks exactly the same as yours...

i wonder if there is an aluminium alternative that would be more affordable.
nothing wrong with that price per se. but this mornign i bought a driveshaft bearing for less than this stainless tube. so it certinaly feels expensive considering the complexity of shape and amount of material used to fabricate

Point taken Tuga. In the end with my (smaller) heater hose aluminium insert I decided to clean up the old part with wet 'n dry and jubilee-clip it back into place to make up a spare hose. - It keeps this poorly-designed original hose as a 'reasonable' spare without throwing money at something I'm hoping not to have to use.

And yes, we ought to shop around and share knowledge of good, v-f-m m100 parts.
