Check
www.tirerack.com --> not to buy from them but to enter in your tire size and ask for summer tires ONLY (you don't need all-season) & other parameters to help you narrow down your tire selection.

BTW, if you call The Tire Rack and discuss with them what are looking for in a tire they will suggest the right tire for you. Not bad for the price of a toll-free number!

I just bought a set of Goodyear Eagle Gsd3s about 2 months ago. They are extremely grippy in the dry, and do pretty good in the wet. I had Yoko Parada's before, and were somewhat dissapointed with them compared to the Goodyears; seemed to push much more in the wet, though this might due to the relatively high tire pressure that I was using. And they did not seem to be as grippy on dry pavement as the Goodyears are.

I recently had Toyo Proxes fitted and I am very pleased with the ride and handling - a lot better than Goodyears IMHO. They've got a butch tread too, if that's your bag!

I'm a Goodyear Eagle F1 fan but have found them much better wearing than Rob. 5000 miles since October and not a bit of wear on the fronts. Perhaps I don't corner as fast as they do in Halesowen ??

I think you'll find it's Rach doing rally-cross to and from work...You'll have to let her drive the Golf Rob!

I had the toyo's fitted when i first bought the car and dont really rate them in the dry however in the wet they are fantastic. I have yoko 539's fitted now which are better in the dry but scary in the wet.

All depends on what you are looking for. Im in for good dry handling and driving like an old lady in the wet.

I'm also pretty cautious in the wet but the Elan is reputedly the fastest Lotus of them all when its wet....
The Goodyear Eagle F1s are superb tyres - their sticky compound means they hold to the road in the dry, but they also have a funky anti-aquaplane tread which make them damn good in the wet too.

It is certainly true to say that after 6000 miles they are bald as a coot!!

You used to be able to get a harder compond higher mileage Eagle F1 (I used to have a set which did 16000 miles and still had more tread on them than a brand new set of the latest ones) - although they seem to have stopped making them.

That said, despite the obvious codt disadvantage, I still think the new F1s offer a far better (if shorter) drive.

Clemo, have you thought of the Michelin Exalto`s. I know there quite expensive, but are supposed to wear really well, & handle really well, wet & dry.

Had the Bridgestone RE730s. They were the baby brothers of the SO2s. Amazing grip. The only drawback was the dental work I had to get replaced from being shaken loose!
Great tires, but you're not going to like the harshness. If the Elan's your daily, I'd try something with a softer sidewall than the SO3.

Recenty rotated the Khumho's (225/45-16) on the back with the Falken Azenis (215/45-16) which had been on the front. Lots of wheelspin now with the Khumho's up front which impresses the babes but you know it's all for show and naught for go... not just in a straight-line but when gunning the car between lanes too. All this is without using nitrous, a scary thought! Never realized how truly good the Falken Azenis were until they were no longer there!
Falken now has a new Azenis, the model 615 which have replaced the model 215 on my car. Looks like a simple upgrade to the tire but the hitch is that they are not offered in a 16" size which will fit the Elan; yikes! Looks like I'll next be going to the set of Dunlop SP9000 which I bought at closeout prices. They were the best tires Dunlop made at the time (2 years ago) and have been sitting in my inside storage room; size 225/40-16.

I take back what I said about the new Falken Azenis model 615. Just been reading about them on the Falkentire homepage and they
quote "Increased internal void ratio delivers enhanced wet grip and aquaplane resistance". Well that's great but I want a tire that is designed to perform well only in the dry. "Increased internal void ratio" means MORE void space, ie,
more tread in the tire and LESS RUBBER ON THE ROAD! So poo-poo on your changes to my beloved tire, Falken.
I could still find a few places selling/listing the old model (Falken Azenis RT-215) but they wanted a premium for them; like $127 vs the $99 Discount Tire used to charge. Too bad, dem was da best tires I
EVER had.
