MAP Sensor

I picked up a new MAP sensor for the Elan.  I purchased a Wells #SU-129 from Autozone for $28.  <br><br>Other part numbers should be GM #16009886, and Standard AS-4.  From what I can tell, these are standard GM 2-bar MAP sensors, and should be available pretty much anywhere.<br><br>FWIW!<br><br>Joshua Lawrence

is that the sensor mounted on the firewall or the intake manifold?  I broke off the round plastic fitting that screws into the manifold (passenger side) and has a vacuum tube attached.  The local Isuzu dealer can't find it in the parts catalog - perhaps the Isuzu had a different set-up.

Mark,<br><br>The Map sensor is on the firewall, pretty much centered.<br><br>Sorry, doesn't sound like what you are looking for.<br>

i just had an overboost situation, checked & found code 31 (Manifold Absolute Pressure - overboost), so i suppose it's further verified. would anybody have any advice or similar experience ? if it were the MAP sensor that needs to be replaced, is that the one stuck on the firewall just below the wiper arm linkages ? at this point, is there any benefit in going for the 2-bar sensor or should i just stick to the stock 1-bar sensor ? <br><br>incidentally, i have been cracking my head over the past 2 weeks trying to find a cause for a slight misfiring. can anyone offer advise as to whether this could be related ?<br><br>cheers ... Rudz<br><br>If you're misfiring and you don't suspect intermittent sensor problems, could be just a build-up of carbon in the combustion chamber.  Possibly use a fuel additive or run 3 tanks of Optimax.  Not sure if additives are frowned upon for Elans though?<br><br>I sometimes get this if I've been caning it for extended periods.<br><br>AndyV

Rudz,<br><br>I was getting code 34! I couldn`t work out the problem! Couple of week later I took her to Chris foulds and he got More codes on the tech 1(41 etc)! Ended up changing the Hall Effect Sensor in the CAS! Jay,<br><br>saw 31 a couple of days back & a 31 with a 34 today. so, i thought to myself that it must be the MAP sensor until you shared your story. i will go check on the CAS before buying the MAP sensor. thanks for the tip. were you experiencing intermittent misfirings too ?<br><br>cheers ... I`m going dizzy going back and fourth between threads  ::)<br><br>I`ve left u a reply on another thread hehehe!<br><br>No i wasn`t getting misfiring, just won`t go above 4,000 revs. But for the cost, i would just change the Hall effect Sensor.<br><br>Hope that works!

I suspect my MAP sensor may be the reason my Elan is struggling to get 20MPG and losing 50BHP.

So seeing as it has GM moulded into the casing, today I've been hunting round the scrapyards to see if any similar aged Vauxhalls use the same part.

There were loads on late Cavaliers, but the numbers moulded into them were different.

A helpful bloke from the parts dept of my local Vauxhall dealership is going to interrogate their worldwide parts system for me when he has access to it on Monday. Meanwhile, I can report that the car won't run with the standard Cavalier part!

Shame really, because a brand new one of those costs £45 + VAT.
Do you know how much the Elan MAP sensor costs? £124.74 + VAT!
They are flippin IDENTICAL!

Anyone got a spare they'd like to sell (or even lend me to eliminate the component from my enquiries)?

You need to look at turbo cars - there was a Cav turbo wasn't there?

To clear up any confusion the Elan has a 2Bar MAP sensor - it reads absolute pressure (i.e. the difference between vacuum the manifold pressure). Since atmospheric pressure is around 1bar it can read up to 1 bar of boost.

Inquiring about the Cav (or Calibra) Turbo was my first course of action.

I figured the higher pressures due to the Turbo compared to standard EFI might be the answer.

Unfortunately they said it doesn't have a MAP sensor. However, that was fairly early on in the search before the guy really knew what he was looking for. Might have to remind him, cos surely it MUST have one!

Another possibility is to look at similar aged Saab turbos. After all, I think they too were owned by GM at the time.
