Hi,
My Series 1 turbo .... it feels like a rev limiter is engaging at 4000 revs ... backfires etc....
Seems to be intermittent too?

No light comes on? How do I check the code?
I guess for £25 I should change anyway

Does it do it after you've been at full power? Describe exactly when it happens and whether the orange 'check engine light' comes on. Also describe how long you are limited to 4000rpm. Sounds like it could be overboost.

Best to find out what the code reading is, your symptoms sound the same as what I had and that ended up being a coolant sensor.

mmmm The engine warning light doesnt come on - Ever - The bulb/or something is broken.
But .. I started it this evening, I revved the engine to above 4k all was well, then revved to 6k ish and the exhaust poped a bit - then the 4k limit was back.
It feels just a like a 4k rev limitter......

Its not unknown for unscrupulous w@nkers to pull the bulb when selling a car that's setting a code... perhaps that happened here?
Anyway, either fix the bulb or get hold of an ALDL interface and run ElanScan to diagnose the issue.
