What does N/A mean

Postby Kier » Fri 19.08.2005, 19:05

Seen a few times now people talking about Elan N/A's What does N/A mean?

For example at the bottom of clemos posts;

FROST SILVER N/A.
BRG N/A.

Cheers,
Kier.

Kier,
it stands for normally-aspirated ie no turbo. When the Elan was first launched there were two main options, the Elan or the Elan SE. The Elan SE was turbocharged, the Elan was not. It was not as simple as leaving the turbo off, however as a few bits were different (like no cam angle sensor on the non-turbo version) and the compression ratio on the n/a is higher.

Rumour has it that the n/a is actually faster initially until about 3000 revs when the turbo kicks in and the SE disappears into the distance.

In the event, Lotus sold very few of the non-turbocharged version because people wanted POWER. I believe most are 1990 or early '91. I'm not sure when the last non-turbocharged cars were made, but I'm sure somebody could help with that info.

The n/a is a rarer beast and probably cheaper to insure. It also has a certain following of dedicated sophisticated individuals looking for something different. But then one of them is Clemo so that spoils that theory.

When I bought the BRG one from Clemo I promised to become a defender of the NAs, so I just have to respond (don't I) .

All I'll say at this point is how many of you have driven one

I might well do, if only to give Stevie the opportunity to take the p*ss (not that he needs a reason).

You surely can't be suggesting that your SE struggled to keep up with my (slow) S2 last time

(There are those round here who will tell you that S2's are slow, if so I guess I only buy slow Elans :) )

Nige,
that's not by any chance the slow S2 with a big stainless exhaust which you use to test ElanScanMan's mountain chips is it?

Well, I would never use the word struggled! I think it was more a case of me not wanting to push the SE, what with it being new to me and all that!

Although as John mentioned, I do think that little chip of yours may have had something to do with it!
