Cracked exhaust

Hi,

I seem to have a crack around where the very front of the exhaust goes into the pre cat <correction>.

Is it likely to be possible to get this welded up? Just as a short term measure to keep the car going until I can arrange a replacement exhaust?

you could indeed weld it up but it would be a short term bodge. BTW the bit its bolted on to is the pre-cat not the manifold. :)

I could really do with a car this weekend and, of course, I just sold my other car last weekend!!!! :x So if can get away with a short term bodge.....

this is a weak point in the exhaust system as the engine vibrates on its mounts the joint takes the punishment. most people with aftermarket systems have a flexy coupling fitted just behind this joint to eliminate the problem.

yes, just tell them to be careful so they don't weld the PAS lines, etc.

this is a common fault as Stevo pointed out. Mine sure sounded race-worthy when cracked like this! :D

You can drive it like that if you want though, but yes replacement exhaust is the better way to go than pay for Lotus replacement parts -- there's loads of info on everyone's exhaust adventures within the Forum . . .

Hadn't read the 'Stiffy' project before.
Sounds like I probably do so i'll have to have a think about that!!

Have been keeping an eye on the Bargain Exhaust post for a while :wink:
Sounds like a good time for an upgrade to me!

Bang some Gum Gum paste on it as a temporary fix. Its not flexible i dont think but should keep you going for a while.
available from halfords £2.99 iirc.

Using it on mine at the mo whilst awaiting for Stevo to get a hard on.
4+ hours stuck in a damp bucket seat with a mad Irishman at the wheel - Deep joy!!!!

Did mine the day before its MOT and it passed with flying colours.
once you've applied it moisten it with a damp cloth/finger, turns out really neat.
Apply whilst the exhaust is hot and let harden at least partialy before use or it'll just blast away.

You cant beat a good bodge!

Sorry I was in a noisy zaust topless mode exposing myself to the local masses for admiration. :P

So, latex gloves on to release gun gum on the underside of a hot body... interesting. Yep. A stiffy is required! :D
