Oil return from turbo

Postby Dave M » Tue 31.01.2006, 14:26

I included this as part of a post in my project thread, but need as much input as I can get - so I thought I'd make a separate thread as well.

Due to my new turbo, the oil return outlet is nearly level with the inlet to the block. I wanted to run one piece of hose from the turbo to the block, but the bends are so tight, the hose crimps. One option I've found is an adapter that screws into the turbo that has a 45 degree turn in it (a 90 degree won't work due to the space available). See http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merch ... y_Code=OIL That would allow the hose to run without kinks. The adapter goes from male 1/2" NPT (the turbo plate fitting) to a -10 AN fitting. The problem is, the fitting at the engine is a single barb, slip on fitting. If this fitting were screwed into the block, it could be replaced by a new, angled, -10 AN fitting. But it is pressed in. Not good! I would have to have a number of connections in a very small space (read: potential leaks).

How can I get from a 1/2" NPT threaded fitting (female - see http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merch ... y_Code=OIL ) to the single barb fitting at the engine with a minimum of hose bends and splices in between. Best case is to turn 90 degrees at the block and 45 degrees at the turbo with a metal piece of some sort. I also do not want to put a different return into the block.

Options: 1) the metal adapter mentioned above 2) have a metal pipe made to fit the bends required 3) skip the tight connections and run an aux oil pump back to the block 4) keep searching on the internet for hose adapters...

Doug wrote:3. I'm not sure exactly how you want to run this hose, but cant you put a small pipe lenght in the middle of the hose run? = just cut out the hose by the bend area and insert a bent piece of pipe in its place with clamps on each end -- the pipe can't ever kink that way . . .

That is one option, yes. My problem is the routing goes something like this:

Oil out from turbo points straight down --> turn 45-90 degrees --> run hose to block --> turn almost 90 degrees into block fitting.

If I use a bent piece of pipe at the block and then attach a piece of hose to it and the block fitting (and a short piece of hose it would be!), I should have enough space to keep the pipe running "downhill" from the turbo to the block.

Know anyone who can whip up a small little 5/8" pipe with mandrel bends and flared ends?

If you send a sketch I have an automotive hose shop walking distance from my office? :)

I use Baker all the time and they always have what I need in a pinch.

Dave, I must be a little luckier than you because my center housing fitting was high enough to go straight down make a turn slightly uphill to the drain and dump in. I hope it won't be an issue and I don't think it will be because the center housing is higher than the drain so it might trap the oil in the dip a little, but overall should drain okay. I found some 5/8" aluminum tubing left over from an old AMG project that never went into production that worked for me. All I needed to do was cut it and connect with hose. It only has a barb on one end but as long as it's flowing without leaking I'm Kool and the Gang!

No kidding - I was either going to source from them or Pegasus Racing in WI! I love Baker...spent a fortune on turbo hose there over the years. I am also going to talk to them about getting the coolant hose pieces I need to finish my Samco set. They seem to be the only ones who have 1.25" ID coolant hose in 45 and 90 degree bends.

I'm going to measure and put together the "ideal" hose tonight. I'll let you know - thanks, Brian!

Dave, when you asked the question above I thought of Brian right away--glad he piped up--maybe you can buy some brakeline tubing and bend it by hand to make a template which can then be mailed to the shop by Brian so they can use it to make a copy in the proper pipe. Then when you get it it should be real close and you can just give it a "little love" to align it perfectly and bob's-your-uncle

After a look at the car again last night, it looks like the best option will be the 45 degree, -10 AN out from the turbo, a piece of braided -10 line (all of 3" ), an AN to barbed adapter, then one of the stock 45 degree molded hoses to the engine. Those stock oil return pieces are decent pieces and hopefully one is good enough not to leak.

This will leave me with only 2 clamped fittings, the rest will all screw together (3 others). That's better than I had with the old setup (1 screw, 4 clamps). Best case scenario would have been an AN fitting at one end of the hose leading to a bare hose that I could get a clamp on. Then it would have been only one clamp at the engine, but I should be OK.

If you guys think of anything else, let me know as the parts won't be in for a bit, I'm sure.

Does anyone know what kind of pressure there is at this point in the system? I can't imagine it is very high considering 1) the size of the stock hose, and 2) considering the stock setup uses simple hose clamps and single barb fittings to hold everything together. Going with screw-together AN fittings may be overkill if I can get the correct angle to a barbed fitting coming out of the turbo.

The pressure is very low, no specs though.

I had the same problem, I got around it by welding a barbed 90 fitting to a flange and using that. It worked out well, I imagine you could custom make up something for use with braided hose if you prefer....
