Postby leonfoxyy » Tue 21.03.2006, 22:01

hi, just dragged the elan out of from winter hibernation and decided to get enthusiasic and fit a new clutch, got quoted £250 plus vat for clutch assy. Is this the going rate for uk prices? Also i read someone was getting one posted from the usa...if so how much?

My Stage 2 Kevlar clutch came from Horsepowerfreaks in the US. (Not strictly necessary unless you are one.) 8)

is it really imperative to replace all parts of the clutch in the Elan, or just the disc?
yes it's mine and no you can't drive it

Would be helpful for me to know the answer to come of these questions also. Mine is on the way out - just about limits of adjustment; and get slight slippage with low gear boost. And as I'm looking at Everest chips, I'm thinking i might need to make sure all parts are tip-top.

Anyone further advice on clutches? Which parts need replacing? Are there cost effective alternatives to the OEM one? And which source offers the best price?

Thanks

Your better of replacing the full clutch kit, here`s list from SJ`s site:-

Clutch | Center plates
CLUTCH CENTRE PLATE (For SE Turbo) A100Q6003F EACH 97.46

Clutch | Pressure plates
CLUTCH PRESSURE PLATE (For SE Turbo) A100Q6011F EACH 71.90

Clutch | Release bearings
CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING (All models) A100Q6013S EACH 37.68

All + vat

The other option is to go for a uprated clutch but this would have be bought from the USA

How much would an uprated clutch from the USA cost? and how many people might we need for a group buy? I'm down for one given that I've been told my clutch is on its last legs (no slippage yet, but very high biting point)

I'd be up for an uprated clutch if it worked out at a comparitive price to the original replacement from Lotus (i.e. doesn't require me to re-mortgage)

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I had presumed that the clutch would be biting 'low' if it was on it's way out and at the limits of adjustment. In other words, bites very quickly when foot pressure is taken off.

If I'm wrong and a well worn clutch normally bites, as Alan suggests, then mine might have just been adjusted the wrong way :?

Could someone clarify for me?

Ok... I've just driven the car and realised it does bite 'high', not low as I thought yesterday. Being a bit of a plonker

So therefore I probably need the new clutch more than I made out. Mine is not slipping yet also, but the bite does make it a bit sharp to drive.
